2008 nissan pathfinder Professional Edmunds Review
Source: Edmunds

...The new 5.6-liter V8 comes can't beat Jeep's Hemi, but comes out ahead of V8s from Ford, GM, and Toyota with 310 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, raising the Pathfinder's towing capacity from 6,000 to 7,000 pounds. Both engines pair to a five-speed automatic transmission. The four-wheel-drive system on the LE V6 and all V8 models contains a full-time mode for all surfaces; all other 4WD Pathfinders use a part-time system. In testing, we found that a 4WD Pathfinder could do 0-60 mph in a brisk 7.0 seconds. Safety: Every 2008 Nissan Pathfinder comes with antilock brakes and stability control. Only...

...It's doubtful that many thought the Pathfinder would come this far when it was first introduced.Safety features for all trim levels include a stability-control system, rear traction control and anti-lock all-disc brakes. They're in a $700 option package for other Pathfinders.Major options include an $1,850 package for the SE with the power sunroof and Bose sound system. 2008 Nissan Pathfinder Overview

...This SUV comes in 7 trims. All trims feature a standard 4.0 L, 266 hp V6 engine with 5 speed automatic transmission. Gas mileage comes out to around 13 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway. This model has 4 doors, seats 7, and tows up to either 6000 or 7000 lbs. depending on the trim.Overall, drivers like the solid powertrain and good handling. However, the ride could use some improvement and interior room gets a bit tight once you reach full seating capacity. In any event, the Pathfinder has taken some positive steps in the last few years and should continue to maintain its respected...

Why should I also consider these?

The Pathfinder's design is already several years old, but it feels thoroughly modern next to the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, which mates dated styling with a cramped interior and subpar performance.

The Ford Explorer has a nicely updated, comfortable interior with more standard safety features across the line, but it doesn't possess the sturdy off-road ability of the 2008 Nissan Pathfinder.

The Toyota 4Runner is another possibility, with plenty of off-road ability, though it has a noisier interior and a harder ride and can get quite expensive at the top of the line.

An alternative might be the Dodge Durango, which offers a slightly larger package overall, though the Durango doesn't handle the road especially well.

Each of these vehicles has poor fuel economy and a less-than-ideal ride, and most shoppers--if they don't need to tow frequently--would be better suited with a modern crossover design from these automakers, such as the GMC Acadia, Dodge Journey, Ford Edge, or Toyota Highlander.

2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
You should only consider the 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer if you frequently tow; even then, most truck-based alternatives handle much better.

2008 Dodge Durango
If you plan to tow, a 2008 Dodge Durango with a V-8 will work nearly as well as a Tahoe or Expedition, at a lower price.

2008 Ford Explorer
As the perennial best-selling truck-based SUV, the Ford Explorer is still the one to beat.

2008 Toyota 4Runner
The 2008 Toyota 4Runner isn’t as roomy or as efficient as newer crossover designs, but if you need towing or off-road capabilities, it’s a good, safe choice.
