...Powertrains and Performance: The 2009 Nissan GT-R is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that generates 473 hp and 434 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission routes this prodigious power to the ground via an advanced all-wheel-drive system. In our instrumented testing, the 3,836-pound GT-R teleported to 60 mph in a drama-free 3.3 seconds, thanks to its launch control function, and turned in a blistering 11.6-second quarter-mile at nearly 121 mph. Safety: Standard safety features on the 2009 Nissan GT-R include massive Brembo brakes with...

...showing you the car's water and oil temperatures, speed, racing times and just about anything else you'd like to know. Really, there's more than you can do with it -- but it's fun going through the 11 different screens. Slowing down on I-96 south, I watched the CR-X slowly make it way up to me. The two teens kept holding up their cell phones. They may have already known that 2,500 GT-Rs would start rolling into dealerships in June. After that, Nissan will limit GT-R sales in the U.S. to about 1,500 a year. More than 600 Nissan dealerships will sell the GT-R and one of the steps to gain...

Review: 2009 Nissan GT-R

...We left the gearbox in automatic mode for most of our drive, and downshifts and upshifts seemed to occur at just the right time. Unlike some other automatically shifting manual transmissions on the market, the GT-R’s gearbox is incredibly smooth, and even at full throttle shifts are barely noticed.Traction ActionOf course none of this matters if you can’t get power to the pavement, and the GT-R provides little drama in this respect. Traction is handled by a sophisticated, electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system routed through a 4-wheel independent suspension. The setup typically...

...The coefficient of drag is an excellent 0.27, thanks to extensive wind-tunnel testing throughout the GT-R's development. "Every edge was designed for superior aerodynamics," Bedrosian said. The car has super-wide high-intensity-discharge headlights designed for high-speed cornering at night. The dual-clutch transmission has a hill-start-assist feature, and the all-wheel drive is designed to deliver up to 50 percent of the torque to the front wheels if necessary. The system is fully automatic; no driver input is needed. Among standard features are 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels...

...which, along with the transaxle shift points and vehicle dynamic control, are controlled through a three-position rocker switch in the cockpit: Comfort, Sports (default), and Race. The difference between the first two settings is subtle, but not so for "R" - no body rolls and no-prisoners-taken-style shifting! The braking is by Brembo, with 15-inch vented, cross-drilled rotors all around and six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear. The GT-R rides on 20-inch wheels. While there is a six-cylinder engine at the heart of all this, it is neither straight nor simply the...

...The only transmission is a six-speed automated manual with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. There's no conventional stick or clutch pedal, but the gearbox has two clutches — one for the odd gears and one for the even — that allow it to shift almost instantly. It's akin to Volkswagen's Direct Shift Gearbox, used on the GTI and R32. The all-wheel drive is rear-biased to give the balanced feel of a rear-drive car. Up to 50 percent of the torque can be shifted forward, automatically, when needed. The standard wheels are 20 inches in diameter and the tires are Bridgestone summer...

...It is also blisteringly fast. Despite the weight -- about 3,900 pounds -- the all-wheel-drive system helps keep the car, and its nitrogen-filled tires, planted on the race track, and when it does finally break loose, it does so gently. The horsepower comes on in a rush and just keeps coming, but the transmission manages the power admirably. The Brembo brakes are superb. This is a wicked fast car, traveling from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, which is faster than -- well, almost anything. A Porsche 911 Turbo and a Dodge Viper each take 3.7 seconds. Fuel mileage? EPA-rated at 17 mpg city, 21 mpg...

...And there was this -- Courtroom 1-D in the Fairfax General District Court. I had gone there with Ria Manglapus, my associate in vehicle evaluations, on the matter of a speeding ticket -- Ria's ticket, her first ever in 32 years of driving. She got that one in another sports car, the Infiniti G37, a good runner, but a decidedly lesser being in comparison with the GT-R. It did not matter. There is something about sitting in traffic court, watching justice dispensed with efficient, brutal impartiality, that takes the joy out of driving a car such as the Nissan GT-R. In stripping it of that joy...

...with bead knurling on the wheel lip (to prevent the tires from twisting on the rim), wrapped in spec-built, nitrogen-filled Bridgestones. It all gets pretty nerdy from here, so let me button it up a bit. Computer-controlled adaptive suspension. Race-threshold settings for transmission, traction and stability control. And a launch-control system that allows the mother of all torque-brake takeoffs: There's a brief moan as the highly excited gear packs sluice torque fore and aft, but there's no drama, no wheel spin, no choking incense of clutch. The GT-R simply begins moving like some...

...If you're looking for handling prowess and track times, though, the GT-R's standard all-wheel drive gives it an edge. The GT-R's closest competitors are the more-ambitious versions of the Porsche 911, including the all-wheel-drive 911 Turbo. Starting price: $126,200. There are other production cars that rival or beat the GT-R in one regard or another, but most are exotic supercars with exotically high price tags. We're talking hundreds of thousands of smackers. Sick Quick Fitted with a heavy racing helmet, I was prepared for a neck snap when I stood on the GT-R's accelerator. What I got was a...

Why should I also consider these?

Like some vice-presidential picks, the GT-R has laid low some well-thought-out plans for world domination with its scorching power and deft handling.

The most attuned competitors are the new 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

The ZR1's supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 will push it to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, 0.3 second faster than the Corvette Z06, according to GM; it'll hit 100 mph in 7.0 seconds, turn in quarter-mile times of 11.3 seconds at 131 mph, and charge to a claimed top speed of 205 mph, all for a price tag some $20,000 higher than the GT-R—and minus two seats.

The 911 Turbo punches out 480 horsepower for $125,000—and offers itself in convertible trim for buyers who want the top-down driving experience at nearly 200 mph.

2009 Chevrolet Corvette
While the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette provides plenty of impressive performance to dream and/or brag about, this car is not a one-trick pony. If ever there were a practical sportscar, this is it.
