2013 mini cooper countryman Professional Edmunds Review

...An overboost function can briefly push midrange torque up to 221 lb-ft. Mini says a manual-equipped Countryman JCW will cover zero to 60 mph in about 7.1 seconds, or about 7.5 seconds when equipped with the automatic. Even with the added power and standard all-wheel drive, fuel economy should still remain pretty high. An enhanced sport suspension complements the Countryman JCW's all-wheel-drive ability, with stiffer spring and damper rates and stronger antiroll bars. The Countryman JCW also sits nearly a half-inch lower than the base Countryman, improving its handling characteristics. The...

...Fuel economy is 25/33/28. Safety: All 2011 Mini Coopers come standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control and front-seat side airbags. Side curtain airbags are standard on the hatchback, while the convertible features pop-up rollover bars and larger front side airbags that extend to head height. Traction control is optional. In Edmunds braking, various Mini Cooper S models with 17-inch wheels stopped from 60 mph between 112 and 115 feet -- excellent results. The Cooper has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash testing procedure. Its 2010 rating (which...

2012 MINI Cooper S Countryman Professional Cars.com Review

...For the most part, I was happy with the cabin space. Drivers as tall as 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-6 had no complaints about headroom and were reasonably satisfied with legroom, though a few of us noted that the low seats left little support for the front of a tall driver's thighs. Raising the manually adjustable seat would help, but before I got it as high as I wanted, the rearview mirror began to block my forward view. The passenger seat's pedal-free footwell made for greater leg extension and comfort. It raises and lowers, too. The door armrest feels a little too far outboard, but I suppose that...

...but with the sport setup in the S and John Cooper Works versions, and the subsequent wheel size increases to 16 and 17 inches, the ride can get quite tiring. The standard run-flat tires on the S only exacerbate the issue and take a lot of fun out of the MINI, at least in the long term. Spirited jaunts around town are still invigorating, albeit less so on the pothole-strewn motorways of the snow belt than on glass-smooth southern surfaces. The other ubiquitous complaint with the MINI has always been the noise, penetrating into the cabin via road and tires and wind. More insulation has been...

...Mine perfected the hurdle, but yours may have issues. For those parents not wishing to subject their kids to the hurdle, a two-piece center rail can be had at no additional cost. We all liked the dual-panel sunroof configuration, which would justify the need for a sunglasses holder in the backseat. Both the front and rear panels tilt open, but only the front panel slides back. It would be great for William and Harry to look out of or more suitably, for their admirers to look into. All the fun details like the huge speedometer and toggle switches with bumpers that make a Mini a Mini are...

...With the temporary overboost engaged, that can be bumped to 192 lb-ft and shoot the little hatch to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds with the 6-speed manual. Even with that significant power boost, the S still manages a 27/36 fuel economy rating with the manual and 26/34 with the automatic. But for those for whom no sacrifice is tolerable, the JCW trim breaks the 200-hp barrier with 208 horses and 192 lb-ft of torque – enough to get to 60 in 6.2 seconds. Even still, the JCW trim manages 25/33 with the 6-speed manual transmission, the only available. The manual is definitely the better of the two...

2012 mini cooper roadster Professional Edmunds Review
Source: Edmunds

...Apart from the soft top, the Roadster will be similar to the Coupe in terms of trim levels and powertrains. As such, base, S and John Cooper Works versions will be offered with their three corresponding inline-4 engines -- a 1.6-liter with 121 horsepower, a turbocharged 1.6 with 181 hp and a more potent turbo 1.6 with an impressive 208 hp. As Mini claims that the John Cooper Works Coupe will be the quickest and fastest Mini ever (zero to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds accompanied by a top speed of 149 mph), we imagine the J.C.W. Roadster will be capable of virtually the same big numbers. Fuel...

Why should I also consider these?

No longer unique in the American marketplace, the MINI now has some competition in the small hatchback segment.

The Volkswagen Beetle, all-new for 2012, has its own take on quirky style and offers some interesting performance possibilities with the Beetle Turbo.

Fiat's 500 is another contender for unique looks, though its long-distance steering feel puts it in a less-focused performance class.

Ford's Fiesta is perhaps the MINI Cooper's closest match, though without the higher-performance options found with the MINI.

Mazda's Mazda2 fits in the same category as the Fiesta, though its interior is somewhat less premium than either the Ford or the MINI.

Finally, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is a great sporting alternative, with even less weight and more true sports car capability thanks to its balanced rear-drive platform, but it sacrifices space and practicality to get there.
