2008 mini cooper clubman Professional Edmunds ReviewSource: Edmunds...Interior Design and Special Features: The Mini Clubman features rear seat legroom. If you've ever ridden in a regular Mini, you'll know that's quite an accomplishment, considering that legs are generally a hindrance for rear passengers. The Clubman's passenger-side access door also makes climbing in and out of the backseat a much easier proposition. For front occupants, the Cooper is surprisingly spacious for a wide variety of driver sizes. Even those taller than 6 feet will find a comfortable seating position, thanks to long seat-track travel and a telescoping steering column. Tucked behind... |

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Luckily, there was room to spare in my lane, even when a truck would shave the line into my lane. Going up hills, however, I found myself downshifting to fourth gear in order to keep up with traffic. More power would have been very handy at those times. One impressive stat I came across was the 36 mpg my Clubman reached in the real world. The EPA gas mileage is 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg for the manual and 28/34 for the automatic. If you're considering this car, I'd suggest getting a manual transmission. It lets you compensate for the lack of power with downshifting. However, I should... |

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman OverviewSource: CarGurus...Dubbed the Clubdoor, it opens toward the rear in conjunction with the front door and allows somewhat better access to the rear seats.Engine choices will be the same as the regular Cooper - either a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter inline 4 that produces 120 horsepower or a turbo version that delivers 175 hp and hits 0-60 in just over seven seconds (slightly slower than the Cooper, due to the extra weight). Buyers will get to select between a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission with sport-shift wheel paddles. Both models feature ABS brakes, traction and stability control, brake assist, a... |

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Four-Cylinder Efficiency Like its Cooper sibling, the Clubman's naturally-aspirated engine ekes out impressive gas mileage: With the manual transmission, mileage is 28/37 mpg city/highway; the automatic returns 26/34 mpg. (The Cooper S Clubman sacrifices 2 to 3 mpg across the board.) Unfortunately, the Clubman recommends premium gas, something many of its competitors don't. Here's how it compares with similarly priced models: Mileage Compared City/hwy. mpg, manual City/hwy. mpg, automatic Recommended fuel Mini Cooper Clubman 28/37 26/34 premium Saturn Astra 24/32 24/30 regular Mazda3... |

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Fuel economy ratings for the base model are 28 miles per gallon in the city and 37 on the highway, while the Cooper S is rated at 26 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. The base engine in the test car delivered more than enough spunk. The six-speed manual transmission has a tight shift linkage that makes it enjoyable to use. A six-speed automatic is optional. Aside from the larger exterior, the biggest change you will notice about the new Mini is its interior. The basic configuration, with a center speedometer and a tachometer mounted on the steering column, remains. The new design... |

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...As with other such three-door vehicles, including some pickup truck models and the old Saturn coupe, that third door can't be opened from the outside, and the front passenger door must be open before the third door can be opened. There is, I suppose, a safety aspect to this: Kids in the back seat can't get out until you let them out, and when they do get out, it's on the curb side, as opposed to the traffic side of the car. The rear hatch is two-piece, configured like a side-by-side barn door. (Mini calls it a "Splitdoor," and calls the third door on the side a "Clubdoor," which actually is a... |

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The Clubman's 37.7 inches of rear headroom is slightly more than the regular Cooper's, and it's competitive with the segment. Cargo room behind the rear seats totals 9.2 cubic feet, a healthy increase over the regular Cooper's 5.7 cubic feet but not as much as many hatchbacks offer. With the rear seats folded, maximum cargo room totals 32.8 cubic feet, up from 24.0 cubic feet in the regular Cooper. Six-way adjustable front seats, faux-leather upholstery, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, various power accessories and a six-speaker CD stereo are standard. Options include a panoramic... |

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The glass over both tilts to let in air, but only the front panel slides open. All that glass provides an open-air feeling and makes the cabin seem larger and roomier than it is. Nice touches include a cooling vent in the glovebox to chill pop or water, a flip-down sunshade over the driver's side window and a novel hunk of dash trim in front of the passenger that, when pushed, lifts to expose a clever little compartment. Clubman starts at $19,950. Stability control, anti-lock brakes and side-curtain air bags are standard, along with AM/FM radio with CD player, power windows/locks/mirrors... |

The 2008 MINI Cooper S Clubman is not a car that's easily classified.
Even though the Clubman is small, it's not a garden-variety subcompact like a Ford Focus or a Toyota Corolla.
And because the Cooper S Clubman has a backseat and room for cargo, it's not a pure sportscar like a Mazda RX-8.
Experts from TheCarConnection.com recommend these "other choices" for the 2008 MINI Cooper S Clubman because they offer practicality in a high-performance package.
The excellent MazdaSpeed3 is truly anonymous next to the MINI Cooper, but it performs better.
The Chevrolet HHR SS and Dodge Caliber SRT4 are two competent high-performance versions of otherwise pedestrian domestic cars, but they offer capable versatility with impressive power and handling.
The A3 is another out-of-class MINI competitor, though with a few options, a Cooper S Clubman will quickly be in Audi pricing territory.
