2009 mercury mariner Professional Edmunds ReviewSource: Edmunds...Class II towing preparation is also available on V6 models only. Powertrains and Performance: The 2009 Mercury Mariner can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive. A 2.5-liter inline-4 that generates 171 hp and 171 pound-feet of torque motivates the I4 and Premier I4 models. The V6 and Premier V6 models come with a 3.0-liter V6 that churns out 240 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Properly equipped, the V6 Mariner can tow up to 3,500 pounds. EPA estimates for front-wheel-drive I4 models stand at 20 miles per gallon city/28 mpg... |

The 3.0-liter V-6 uses a new compression ratio to give it a power boost, up from 200 to 240 hp. The Mariner did away with its hydraulic steering system in favor of electric power-assist steering, resulting in better gas mileage. Both engines can be mated to an optional six-speed automatic... |

2009 Mercury Mariner Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...In my past experience with Travel Link, the fuel-price feature proved especially handy — and reasonably accurate, too. The service runs $6.99 a month, but also requires an in-car subscription to Sirius Satellite Radio, which runs $6.99 and up per month. Naturally, both subscriptions offer discounts if you sign on for longer periods. Alas, the rest of the Mariner's cabin is still hit-and-miss, and cargo configurability is a few steps behind the competition. The dashboard's contemporary shapes and angled surfaces look interesting enough, but there's a tactile severity that permeates the whole... |

2009 Mercury Mariner Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Outside, you can't miss the large satin grille and a higher beltline. The higher beltline is emphasized by integrated running boards and the discontinuation of the molded-in lower body moldings. The Mariner has a revised suspension that delivers a better balance of ride and handling. The power steering is now electronic. The Mariner shares its basic architecture and mechanical components with the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute. All are built at Ford's Claycomo assembly plant. Folding the second-row seat is not a one-step operation. The seat cushion has to be pulled out and folded forward, and... |

2009 Mercury Mariner Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com..."I assume," said Mary Anne, "that this is a four-wheel-drive vehicle." She was speaking as we were boarding the Mariner Premier for our drive up here. I told her we'd be fine. "We don't need four-wheel drive," I boasted. "That stuff's just a lot of marketing hype. This one has front-wheel drive and traction control. That's all we need." Mary Anne's cell phone rang. It was our daughter, Binta, calling from her home here. "Uh-huh," said Mary Anne. "There's snow and ice? Can we get up Mine Hill Road?" she asked, referring to a street leading to our daughter's home. And then there was this: "Dad... |

2009 Mercury Mariner Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...A five-speed manual also is available with the four-cylinder. DRIVABILITY: Cornering and highway maneuverability are very good, especially considering Mariner's cushy ride, with some improvements for 2009. But as mentioned, I wasn't crazy about the steering. Braking is good, but I have to wonder why this revamped SUV has drum brakes in the rear instead of more effective discs. Antilock comes standard, along with stability control and full-length side airbags. STYLING: The large satin grille in Mercury's signature waterfall design is distinctive and helps Mariner stand out from the crowd. The... |

It would have been easy to list two dozen alternatives to the 2009 Mercury Mariner if one looked outside the narrow interpretation of what constitutes a compact SUV.
But one of the closest competitors to the Mariner is the all-new Dodge Journey.
In terms of styling, the Journey has strong looks that turn heads and plenty of features inside, such as multiple cubbies and rich infotainment options.
However, the Journey's interior design isn't pleasing to the eye, and the materials feel subpar for the category―not just in comparison to the Mariner.
In terms of driving dynamics, the Honda CR-V is one of our all-time favorites, but some people have a hard time getting past the SUV's styling and the lack of optional V-6 power.
More people admire the styling of the all-new Saturn Vue.
Like the Mariner, the Vue offers a hybrid option (a second hybrid choice is on the way for the Vue).
The Hyundai Tucson drives more like the pre-2009 Mariners, but does so with a low price and an especially long warranty.
