2012 mercedes-benz slk-class Professional Edmunds ReviewSource: Edmunds...The SLK55 AMG gets a 5.5-liter V8 that produces 415 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. An AMG-tuned seven-speed automatic is standard. Mercedes estimates it will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, which would make it the fastest of the German luxury roadsters. Surprisingly, fuel economy is quite good, with estimates of 19/28/22. Safety: Every Mercedes SLK comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, knee airbags and side airbags that cover the abdomen and head. Also standard are rollbars and the Attention Assist system, which monitors the driver for signs of inattention... |

2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class OverviewSource: CarGurus...offering all of the above except with integrated sequential multipoint fuel injection and ignition, an additional half a liter, and 300 horses available at 6,500 rpm. Torque is upgraded as well with 265 lb-ft, although it doesn’t make its appearance until 4,900 rpm. Still, with these upgrades and attached to the seven-speed automatic – the only available transmission – fuel consumption barely changes, delivering 18/25 on premium gas.Apart from powertrains, the SLKs are visually almost interchangeable and offer the same interior features and options. The retractable hardtop raises and... |

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...a graduated federal excise tax from $1,000 to $7,770, applied to new cars with combined city/highway ratings of 21.5 miles per gallon or less (for the highest penalty, it’s — gulp, guzzle — 12.5 mpg or less). The SLK350 is nobody’s fuel-economy queen. Thanks to its advanced engine technology and seven-speed automatic transmission, however, it gets 20 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway for a combined 24.5 mpg — not much to cheer about, but nothing to cry over, unless you consider that it requires premium gasoline. There are many compensating... |

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class OverviewSource: CarGurus...Buyers can also choose a more traditional body-colored metal panel or a static tinted glass panel, but the Magic Eye is quite cool – pun intended. Same with the optional photo-reflective leather, which Mercedes claims will reduce surface temperature by up to 18 degrees when sitting in the sun. But if cool is your concern rather than hot, grab the Heating Package for heated seats and the AirScarf system which blows warm air on the back of your neck for extended open-air motoring. Chassis attention by way of reinforced members and side impact structures as well as new, fiber-reinforced roll... |

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The seats, unfortunately, remain too stiff, with little payoff on curvy roads. Get the SLK in a tight sweeper, and your backside still slides too much. Power adjustments are standard, but tall drivers will want more range. At 5-foot-11, I drove with the chair all the way back. Trunk volume is 10.1 cubic feet, falling to 6.4 cubic feet with the convertible top lowered. Both figures compare to the Z4, but that illustrates a drawback of folding hardtops. The soft-top TT and Boxster don't encroach on luggage room when you lower the roof. Safety, Features & Pricing The SLK hasn't been... |

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...So are head-extending side airbags that deploy from the doors. SLK55 AMG Mercedes-Benz has revived its high-performance AMG trim (absent for the 2011 model year) for the redesigned 2012 SLK-Class. The 2012 SLK55 AMG features the only V-8 powertrain offered on the roadster. Like the four-cylinder and six-cylinder, which feature new fuel economy measures, the new V-8 is also more fuel efficient and powerful than its predecessor. The 415-hp, 5.5-liter V-8 produces 60 hp more than the last generation's 5.4-liter V-8. That's achieved through a high-pressured fuel-injection system and high... |

Luxury convertibles are a mixed lot.
Some have hardtops, some are ragtops.
Some seat four (on paper, at least) and some are two-seaters.
The SLK's competition hits it from all these angles.
The BMW Z4 is right in its wheelhouse, and if anything, it's a little more evocative in its styling and its balanced performance.
The Porsche Boxster--and the hardtop Cayman version--are brilliant mid-engine performers with the steering and chassis dynamics of cars twice as expensive, and they're among our top choices in the segment.
For left-field alternatives, we'd look at the Infiniti G37 Convertible, a folding-hardtop affair with luxurious fittings and good, if not great, performance.
And reaching upward in price, there's always the suave Jaguar XK convertible, a pavement-rippling performer as a base coupe or convertible, or a throaty growler in supercharged XKR form.
