...The Lotus Esprit may not be as easy to live with as an Acura NSX or Porsche 911, but it's not as common, either.Published: 10/02/2004 Updated: 10/02/2009 What's New for 2004: No changes for the Esprit.
Pros: Sharp steering, exclusivity, fighter-jet acceleration. Cons: Dated chassis, minimal outward visibility, cramped cockpit...

...Newer cars like the Acura NSX, Ferrari 360 Modena and Porsche 911 all offer similar or better levels of performance while still managing to provide a more refined ride on city streets. Another problem with the Esprit V8 is its interior. Tall drivers over 6-feet tall will feel claustrophobic once inside. The narrow seats can be comfortable for long durations, but the narrow footwells leave little room for the driver's left leg. Outward visibility is particularly bad, and the rearview and outside mirrors are virtually useless. Discriminating pedestrians will go berserk when they spot an Esprit...

...The Esprit has functional air scoops to cool the brakes and an attention-getting wing perched on the rear deck. With an overall length of 172 inches, the Esprit is a few inches shorter than the Ferrari 360 Modena. The front wheels are 17-inch diameter, and the rears are 18-inch diameter. Interior Like many sports cars, the two-seat Esprit has a snug interior that is tight for occupants more than 6 feet tall. Leather upholstery, power windows and locks, and a multi-speaker stereo are among the expected amenities, but cruise control is not available. Under the Hood A 3.5-liter V-8 with twin...

...A front valance with “winglets” sits ahead of the front wheel arches. A zinc-clad steel backbone chassis is used, and dual self-balancing fuel tanks are installed. Current Esprits have AP Racing curved-vane brake discs and calipers. Functional air scoops cool the brakes, and a wing perches atop the rear deck. Measuring 172 inches long overall on a 96-inch wheelbase, the Esprit V8 is a little shorter than the Ferrari 360 Modena. The front tires measure 17 inches in diameter, while 18-inchers are used in the rear. The Esprit V8 has a fully independent suspension. Interior The snug...

...Lotus uses a fully independent suspension for the Esprit. Interior Serious sports car fans expect a snug two-place interior, and that?s precisely what they get in the Esprit, which is tight for anyone taller than 6 feet ? this is no surprise as the car stands 45.3 inches tall. Hand-finished leather upholstery, power windows, central locking, heated power mirrors, remote keyless entry with an anti-theft system and a multispeaker Alpine CD stereo are standard, but cruise control is not available. Options include a glass roof panel, OZ three-piece racing wheels and customer-selected paint. Under...
