2008 lexus rx 400h Professional Edmunds Review

...EPA-estimated fuel economy is superior to that achieved by gas-only V6 or V8 competitors. Rated at 27 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, the front-drive RX 400h is also as efficient (or more so) than many smaller four-cylinder sport utilities. Safety: Standard RX 400h safety equipment includes front seat-mounted side airbags, a driver knee airbag and rollover-sensing front and rear head curtain side airbags. Antilock brakes, stability control and traction control are also included. Adaptive cruise control is available as an option, as is a rear back-up camera that's included with the optional...

...CDs sound great though. The electric power rack-and-pinion steering does feel a little loose on the highway but I attributed that more to bad driving than bad steering. It moves so quickly, I often found myself going faster than I should -- on exit ramps, for example, and that's when I noticed some heavy body roll. The RX 400h drives like a much smaller vehicle. Despite its size, it rides much more like a car than a truck, the ideal for any crossover. And when your driving gets a little too aggressive, Lexus includes electronic stability control and antilock brakes to quickly straighten you...

...Combined with the 12,000-rpm-capable high-torque electric motors, you'll have a total of 268 hp available. The transmission is a planetary gear transaxle, which acts like a conventional CVT transmission. 0-60 in the front-wheel-drive model comes up in 7.5 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive version takes 7.3 seconds. The RX 400h handles beautifully, being responsive and firm as it corners, with less lean than its non-hybrid sibling, the RX 350. The cabin is quiet at all speeds - Lexus engineers even aerodynamically shaped the roof rack.Inside, you'll find Lexus quality. The RX 400h is easy to...

...The optional rear-seat entertainment system has a 9-inch screen, and a Mark Levinson audio system is available once you add the navigation system. Under the Hood Combining a 208-hp, 3.3-liter V-6 and electric motor-generators, the second-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain generates 268 hp total. A continuously variable transmission sends that energy to the wheels. The full-hybrid system can operate in gas or electric mode, as well as a combination of both. Lexus says the gas engine starts at a lower power level, which makes the transition between power sources harder to discern. Like...

...On the positive side, the Bluetooth link is easy to set up and worked really well for me. Thanks to the hybrid engine, the interior is completely silent at low speeds. In fact, I never got used to the electric engine's silence. When the V-6 engine cuts in, however, it's on the loud side, so I guess it averages out. The backseat of the RX is roomy and comfy for people big and small alike. Three (smallish) booster seats can fit side-by-side, and the seat belts were easy for my little guys to connect. What was less fabulous was how easily my guys bumped their heads on the rear-entertainment...

...seat-mounted side air bags for the front occupants; side-curtain air bags for front and rear passengers; and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Unlike the Highlander, the RX 400h is offered with only two rows of seating, for a maximum of five people; the Highlander hybrid comes with a third seat and can hold seven passengers. Cargo capacity is 38.3 cubic feet behind the second seat, the same as in the RX 350. That can be expanded to almost 85 cubic feet by folding down the rear seat, which has a 40/20/40 split design. Other standard features include rain-sensing windshield wipers and adaptive...

Why should I also consider these?

The Highlander Hybrid is closely related mechanically to the 2008 Lexus RX 400h; it has a boxier body style that makes its interior a bit roomier, though it's not as plush, as comfortable, or as quiet as the RX.

There are now several other hybrid sport-utility models to choose from.

The Mercury Mariner Hybrid and its mechanically identical sibling, the Ford Escape Hybrid, also have a full-hybrid system and get impressive fuel economy of up to 34 mpg city, 30 mpg highway.

That's significantly better than the RX 400h and Highlander, but they're notably smaller; they also lack the luxury comforts and high-tech features of the RX 400h.

The Saturn Vue Hybrid is a "mild" hybrid, meaning that the electric motor system only assists the engine to help improve fuel economy, but it gets 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway.

If some measure of towing or off-roading is in order, you might also consider the M-Class diesel, which has tremendous torque and overall performance that matches the V-6 version of the M-Class, but with a rating of 24 mpg highway.

2009 Mercury Mariner
The 2009 Mercury Mariner is an attractive and capable compact SUV, now with vastly improved performance.

2009 Saturn VUE
With its available V-6 engine, the 2009 Saturn Vue is a bit more fun to drive than other compact SUVs; otherwise it’s not a standout.

2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
The 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers the same room and amenities that the nonhybrid Highlander does, only with better fuel economy and the badge of honor that comes with driving something that's trying to be green.
