2008 lexus is f Professional Edmunds ReviewSource: Edmunds...Safety: Stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with brake assist, front-seat knee and side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags all come standard on the 2008 Lexus IS-F. An optional pre-collision system employs radar to monitor the likelihood of a frontal collision and adjusts seatbelt tension and braking force accordingly. The IS-F has not been officially crash tested, nor is it likely to be. However, in government crash tests, its IS 350 sibling earned four stars (out of a possible five) for driver and front-passenger frontal impact protection. It also earned five... |

2008 Lexus IS-F Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Since there wasn't a surplus of backseat legroom, you'd have to slide the front seat forward to a less-than-comfortable position to fit an infant seat back there. And if tall folks sat in the back, they'd face an uncomfortable ride. However, there's a nice armrest with two cupholders back there, so the kiddies could have their beverages. The seat belts were nice and stable, which made it easy for the little guys to buckle up. While the IS-F doesn't exactly cater to families, it's workable. Safety in the IS-F isn't just about airbags. Of course, there are tons of them. And it's not just about... |

2008 Lexus IS-F Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Sequential Shifting That's Truly Sequential When you're really heavy on the gas, the right-hand — upshift — paddle usually triggers a quick response. Likewise, the left-hand paddle effects a quick throttle blip and deft rev-matched downshift. Technically, the transmission shifts quickly, but that doesn't mean the initial response time is always good. It's at its worst when you shift by more than one gear. Downshift from, say, 7th to 5th or 4th gear, and it steps through each one rather than hopping directly. The same is true of multiple-gear upshifts. Flick the "+" paddle three times, and... |

2008 Lexus IS-F Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...I guess it's a good thing the Lexus has eight gears. For chassis upgrades, Lexus ordered parts from a stone quarry and Bethlehem Steel. The front and rear spring and shock packages are super-stiff and -- with the wheels tied together by major anti-roll bars front and rear -- the ride quality varies from brisk to brutal. Because the ride height is so low, and the suspension travel so flinty, the car can easily run out of compliance on bumpy roads and get into a jarring, head-tossing, kidney-bruising fit. Also -- as I found out on some of the local canyon roads -- once the suspension travel is... |

2008 Lexus IS-F Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...There's just 30.6 inches of leg room in the back, compared with 43.9 inches of leg room in the front. Most features are standard, such as the keyless start, 10-way power adjustable seats, Bi-Xenon HID auto-leveling headlamps, rain sensing wipers and other gizmos. Options include: the Mark Levinson 300-watt 14 speaker sound system; navigation system, which includes a back-up camera; intuitive park assist; radar adaptive cruise control, which will mark the speed of the vehicle in front of you and maintain a safe distance behind it; and headlamp cleaners. Lexus may not be fluent in German yet... |

2008 Lexus IS-F Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Lexus says the transmission, which it calls direct-sport shift, changes gears within one-tenth of a second and executes rev matching for smoother downshifts and decreased wear. Not to be confused with some automated-manual transmissions, like Audi's S tronic, this one uses a fluidic torque converter — but it locks up in 2nd through 8th gears. Upgraded brakes include larger, cross-drilled discs and six- and two-piston calipers in the front and rear, respectively. The Brembo-brand calipers are gloss black and bear the Lexus logo. The standard 19-inch wheels wear performance tires. Practically... |

The Lexus IS-F competes on performance and price directly with the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and the BMW M3 sedan.
The Benz C63 has a tad more interior room, while the BMW M3 gets a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission later in the year.
The M3 also is offered in coupe and convertible versions.
The Audi RS4 is the only car in this group to offer all-wheel drive, but its pricetag is also substantially higher.
