...Another 12-inch display is fitted in the center console, and this sports several unique features, primary amongst them the Parallax Barrier “Dual View” technology that displays two different images depending on viewer position. This means the driver will see the navigation map from his side of the vehicle, while the passenger will see a movie displayed from his angle, for a simple example. Further interior enhancements include more and softer leather, as well as special attention paid to interior materials and build quality throughout, such as new “luxury grade” European leather trim...

...The touch-screen navigation system is fairly easy to use, but it does have a steeper learning curve than others. Moving between screens is especially confusing, even for simple functions like selecting radio stations. The graphics are crisp and clear, though, as you'd expect in something of this station. One interesting feature is a system that utilizes five exterior cameras so drivers can avoid scratching their expensive paint — there's a $14,500 special paint scheme — when parking at Whole Foods. One of these cameras is the standard rear backup camera, but our test vehicle's rear camera...

...Yet Land Rovers and Range Rovers do extraordinary things, and I like extraordinary. The 2010 Range Rover is, basically, a limousine that can climb a tree. Because it offers, as they say, such a "breadth of capabilities," the Range Rover weighs a lot. A massive, beefy frame, agricultural axles, heavy-duty air suspension and wheels, mighty engines bristling with oil coolers, external oil sumps and waterproofed belt-drives, starters, air conditioning compressors, alternators -- all of this is what you need if you want to be the greatest off-road vehicle on the planet, which the Range Rover...

...It is beautiful, the kind of beauty that engenders lust and loathing. Young men and women of the hipper sort, or whom I presume to possess a sort of hipness, gave me thumbs-up, pleaded with me for a ride, a look inside, or a simple chance, as one young lady put it, "to touch the leather." Some female admirers hailed it as "sexy," which was a kind of music to my age-60-plus ears. Alas, the Autobiography's men chorus also had thunderous rivals, angry people who accused me of supporting, by product choice, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and of single-handedly handing over the environment to global...

...The gauges are digital representations that look and respond like analog gauges. The numbers on either side of the tachometer and speedometer needles grow slightly brighter as the needles sweep around each virtual dial. While the Range Rover may be defined in large part by its performance, the quality, and feel, of interior materials are also important. Wood and brushed aluminum are a counterpoint to the soft leather seats and textured instrument panel. The heated steering wheel was particularly nice on cold mornings. An optional surround camera system uses two cameras in front, one in the...

Why should I also consider these?

The Lexus LX 570 gets some minor updates for 2010, but it's been essentially the same upgraded Toyota Land Cruiser since 2008.

Off-road performance is very good, though its bland appearance falls short of the competition.

The BMW X5 offers third-row seating, but it's otherwise not at any serious advantage.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, despite its military looks, can be very luxurious.

Cadillac's Escalade offers a more on-road take on the large SUV and flashier looks.

None of these vehicles have the sheer style of the Range Rover, however.

2010 Cadillac Escalade
The 2010 Cadillac Escalade is big, brawny, and very thirsty; yet with segment-leading performance and unrivaled style, the Escalade is hard to beat.

2010 Lexus LX 570
The 2010 Lexus LX 570 won't turn heads like a Range Rover or an Escalade, but it is a high-tech and worthy choice.

2010 Mercedes-Benz G Class
The 2010 Mercedes-Benz G-Class takes its off-road-and its luxury-quite seriously.
