2007 kia rondo Professional Edmunds Review

...That engine is good for 162 horsepower and 164 pound-feet of torque. The V6 displaces 2.7 liters and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission. That engine is good for 182 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque, which is slightly less powerful than the same engine as found in the Optima. Even though the option of a V6 will appeal to many buyers, that engine is still smaller and less powerful than those in many of the vehicles the Rondo will be compared to. Those who want a little more control will be happy to know that both transmissions feature a Sportmatic feature that lets the driver select their...

...Maybe retirees who like to go antiquing? The tall windows do give a great view of everything around you - maybe the Rondo will be a fishbowl (all together now) when it grows up. One thing I do know is that the Rondo will be a Spanish-speaking car. In our house, no one could say the car's name without rolling the "R" and stretching out the "O" at the end: "Rrrrrrrrondoooooo!" This added an element of fun and character missing in the car itself. I am convinced the folks at Kia started out with a good idea but wound up with a product that isn't ready to make any life decisions yet. Who knows...

...Hauling a full load of passengers may dictate the optional V-6 engine that has 182 horsepower, but my experience with the four-cylinder was very positive. It cruises comfortably at highway speeds and has good torque for pulling up hills or passing on country roads. Both powerplants are equipped with automatic transmissions that can be shifted manually. The six-cylinder gets a five-speed, whereas the four has a four-speed. The Rondo felt comfortably secure at 70 miles per hour, and wind and road noise were not at all intrusive. The ride was firm without feeling harsh. The front-wheel-drive...

...vans in front of me.The test Rondo rolled over road bumps without fuss and kept the rough stuff away from passengers without being floaty or cushy in its ride.At the wheel, I liked the decent on-center feel of the power-assisted, rack-and-pinion steering and came away with an overall impression of a stable, well-managed ride.I also appreciated the good placement of a "dead pedal"—a flat, sort of upright spot to the left of the pedals for the driver to brace his or her left foot.Industry-leading warrantyAs with all Kias, the Rondo comes with a noteworthy new-vehicle warranty. It provides...

...THE LOWDOWN Performance: The 182 horsepower goes a long way in this lightweight, with good acceleration and freeway power. At 2.7 liters, the V-6 is a small unit with big torque. The base engine is a 2.4-liter four with 162 horsepower. Fuel mileage was a disappointment. With an EPA estimate of 20 city and 27 highway (or 19 city and 26 highway, under the new 2008 testing standards), I expected Ronda to go easier on gas than it did. It seemed to suck down a full tank awfully quickly. Drivability: This is a nice driving, good handling little wagon. The suspension is firm for good handling, yet...

...On the tester, fuel mileage came in at 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Road manners were excellent, and steering was splendidly responsive. Who's going to buy Rondo? Lots of folks, I would think. Potential buyers are college students who are at least 100 miles from home and want affordable transportation that can carry some cargo; 20-somethings who don't want four-figure monthly car payments as they're getting their careers started; and families who want an affordable second vehicle to take on weekend trips and to occasionally haul some bulky cargo. Affordability...

...Still, our EX seemed quite sure-footed, with a good ride and better handling than I expected. The four-cylinder engine (EPA-rated at 21 miles per gallon city, 29 mpg highway on regular gas) never lacked for power. If I carried adult passengers often, or quite a bit of cargo, I probably would want the V-6's extra 20 horses. As it is, the EX tester was reasonably well-equipped. Standard equipment included 17-inch tires and alloy wheels, antilock brakes, side and side-curtain air bags, roof rails, fog lights, keyless entry, cruise control, steering wheel-mounted audio controls for the...

...Once underway, the car has a well-tempered solidity to it. Nothing rattles or squeaks. It's clear to me the company used an unusual amount of Loctite, or the Korean equivalent, on the assembly line. The seat position and sloping nose, as well as the triangular windows at the bottom of the A pillars, opens up the outward views. This is a vehicle for close urban contact, so it's reassuring to be able to see out. It also helps to be able to negotiate tight corners. The Rondo's 34.4-foot turning circle is among the best in class. At 3,511 pounds, the seven-seat Rondo is no featherweight (the...

2007 Kia Rondo Overview

...Two trim levels are available -- the base LX and the sportier EX. All come standard with power features, and plenty of safety features. Kia prides itself on its safety ratings, and the 2007 Rondo comes with ABS brakes, stability control, six airbags, and a tire pressure monitor. The EX adds on roof rails, chrome interior trim, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather trim, cruise control, and keyless entry. Option packages provide a sunroof, heated leather seats, and a rear spoiler. The new Rondo looks too much like a minivan, to the disappointment of some owners wanting a more stylish vehicle. The lack...

...The third seat has a 50/50 folding feature, creating a flat load floor, and the middle seat has a 60/40 split. Cloth seats are standard, but leather is offered on EX models for $1,000, which also includes front seat heaters. A six-way manually adjustable driver's seat with height adjustment is standard, along with a four-way adjustable front passenger seat. The middle row slides forward up to almost a foot to allow for easy access to the third row. In models without the third row, the middle seat does not move. Without the third seat, there are storage bins with lids in the cargo-area floor...
