...Front-drive Patriots with the CVT and 2.4-liter engine are rated at 21/25/23 mpg, while the 2.0-liter engine improves fuel economy to 23/27/24. Safety: Antilock brakes, traction control, stability control with roll-over mitigation and side curtain airbags are all standard on the 2009 Jeep Patriot. Front-seat side impact airbags are optional on both trims. In government crash tests, the Patriot earned four stars out of five for driver protection and a perfect five stars for passenger protection in frontal impacts, while side impact testing yielded a five-star rating for both front and rear...

...One gripe with the 4WD system, however. To engage it, you pull a lever set too far back in the center console. Why hide such a vital control? But once you get to 4WD, Patriot makes it soooo simple to slip into low for rugged off-roading. Slide the gearshift into "L," off you go over hills and through sand. Hill-descent control limits speed down steep grades to keep you in control. On clear pavement the suspension prevents unwanted jolts and the up-and-down jostling common in the less-refined Wrangler. The cabin is fairly quiet, and rear-seat room is ample for two adults and one child. Oddly...

...An Off-Road Crawl Ratio for the CVT is also onboard, but there is no low range. The Patriot's styling does evoke some of the legendary off-road mystique of Jeep. However, is a vehicle for the person who wants to acknowledge the Jeep heritage but needs a fuel-efficient compact car for everyday driving really going to save the faltering company? –Mike MeredithThe Jeep Patriot is a great competitor in the crowded compact SUV segment. With its fuel-efficient engine, nicely equipped interior and compact stature, the Patriot is fully suited for a family on the go. Owning a Jeep gives you...

CarGurus' Review for 2009 jeep patriot

...Its nice retro styling recalls Jeeps of yesteryear, and the same solid build, cargo utility, and off-road ruggedness mean the 2009 Patriot actually lives up to its sporty utility designation.
Decent fuel economy and a low price point keep it affordable, while its roomy cabin easily adapts to single outdoor types or families around town.
But the interior fit and finish still need some work, and the powertrain should be optimized to suit the Patriot's off-road capabilities...

...Additionally, the auxiliary jack on the stereo face is so 2007. Place that plug and the USB adapter into the center console. The nine-speaker stereo system, however, will rock louder than you'll ever need, and the articulating speakers on the tailgate -- they fold down when the liftgate is open -- is a neat surprise. Nice surprises are what win customers and the 2009 Patriot offers a few. It's one thing to poorly build a product and then try to act as if everything is fine. It's another to measure your mistakes and fix them. The new Patriot reinvents itself in a much better light. In the land...

Why should I also consider these?

Boxy styling is actually one of the Patriot's selling points, so those looking at it might also consider the Scion xB, another city-friendly small car.

The Ford Escape, despite its carlike underpinnings, has a style and driving position that's quite trucklike.

With improved safety and standard features for 2009, the Escape is a much better vehicle.

All said, with a price that starts well under $16,000, the Patriot is an awesome value.

The Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander are two other small crossovers that aren't quite as distinctively styled, but they come well equipped.

Shoppers also might consider the Subaru Forester, a small crossover-SUV mainstay that's known for its solid reliability and good resale value, along with its good performance in crash tests.

The Forester handles slightly better than the Patriot, but it suffers from road noise inside, and it's considerably more expensive.

The xB has similar fuel economy and a similar size, though its passenger space isn't quite as usable as that of the 2009 Jeep Patriot.

However, the xB's interior feels more upscale and sportier, but it's a bit more expensive.

2009 Ford Escape
Though it looks decidedly old-school, the Ford Escape is a solid and stylish five-passenger, compact SUV that has been kept up-to-date.

2009 Subaru Forester
It’s significantly improved this year, but the 2009 Subaru Forester remains a unique all-wheel-drive crossover with less power and fewer features, but better carlike handling, than its competition.

2009 Scion xB
The 2009 Scion xB has polarizing looks, a no-haggle dealer experience, and a long safety features list. It provides good value for those on a budget.

2008 Kia Sportage
If you can live without top-level refinement and the absolutely latest technology, 2008 Kia Sportage is a fine little SUV, and considering its price, a genuine value.

2008 Mitsubishi Outlander
Though the first-generation Outlander was often overlooked, the updated 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander has emerged as a well-rounded vehicle--and one of the sportiest-driving small crossovers.
