...With the possible exception of the engine lurking under the hood of theTaurus SHO, there is no finer looking power plant than the 278-horsepower,32-valve heart-stopping V-8 in the Q45. It just may be the Rolex of automotiveengines. The Q45's engine is smooth. By shifting from fourth to third on the car'sautomatic gearbox and pressing the exhilarator (the gas pedal is much morethan an accelerator in the Q45), you leap from 40 mph to 80 mph in the blinkof an eye. You don't expect that from a car the size of the Q45. You alsodon't expect it to handle the way it does, which is somewhere near...

...Powertrains and Performance: The rear-drive Q45 is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 that produces 340 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque. This power is routed through a five-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift mode and downshift rev matching. Safety: The Q45 features a myriad of standard safety features, including dual-stage front airbags with seatbelt sensors that help tailor deployment to collision severity. Front-seat occupants get active head restraints and seat-mounted side-impact airbags. Side curtain airbags protect front and rear outboard occupants. Other features include four-wheel...

...a stowage compartment in the rear parcel shelf; radio controls that pop out from the dash and rear- seat ashtrays that pop out from the doors; heated outside mirrors; 60,000- mile, platinum-tip spark plugs; a feather light spring-held hood; front- and rear-wheel mud flaps; and a service manual that`s the size of ``War and Peace`` in pocketbook form that provides schematics of all systems and diagrams of where o find all components. We enjoyed Infiniti` s simplistic approach to luxury and convenience without the pretention of a Mercedes or BMW. If you need to activate a system, just look at...

...Hogwash. You can have a firm, supportive seat without stitching leather over a block of granite. Sitting in the Q45t seats was as comfortable as trying to sit on a step stool while watching a Bulls game on the tube. The seat stiffness was out of place with Infiniti's luxury image. The biggest irritant, of course, is the price. Here's a car that was unveiled in Nove ber 1989 as a 1990 model with a hefty, $38,000 price tag. Just a few model years later the Q45 is a $47,500 machine, and the upgraded Q45t starts at an even heftier $50,600, which includes the gas-guzzler tax but not the 10 percent...

...Published: 10/02/1993 Updated: 10/02/2009 What's New for 1993: Interior designers get a hold of the Q,
sprucing, coloring and covering everything in beautiful new materials; even the clock on this car masquerades as a handcrafted timepiece.
Additional touches include map pockets to the front seat backs...

...Heated leather seats, power front seats with memory settings, and a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel keep the driver happy, while a 6-CD changer (with rear audio controls), satellite radio, and a sunroof please passengers as well. Safety is not neglected either, and the Q45 earns high ratings for including such features as ABS brakes, stability and traction control, dual front-side and side curtain airbags for each row, a rearview camera, rain-sensing wipers, and a tire monitor. A navigation system became standard last year, but there have been complaints about its ergonomics, as it...

...Published: 10/02/1990 Updated: 10/02/2009 What's New for 1990: The flagship for Nissan's upmarket Infiniti division, the Q45 is the third entry into the growing Japanese luxury segment.
Distinctive styling and a powerful, 270-horsepower V8 engine make this car desirable, as does the extensive standard equipment list and luxurious interior appointments...

...All Q45s are equipped with anti-lock, four-wheel disc brakes. The test car's brakes worked well, but the pedal required significant pressure to engage the ABS. The speed-sensitive power rack and pinion steering is tight, crisp, responsive and conveys good road feel. Two other suspension options are available. Traction control, which prevents wheel slippage, and four-wheel steering. Nissan does not build the Q45 with more than one suspension option. FIT, FINISH, CONTROLS The Q45's interior layout is simple, luxurious, efficient and generally user-friendly. Much has been made of the...

...It's comfortable, quiet and, with a 4.5-liter, 278-h.p., 32-valve, V-8, certainly peppy, though the 15 m.p.g. city/21 m.p.g. highway rating proves energy comes at the expense of economy. But, as we said, if the Clinton administration imposes punitive tariffs on Japanese luxury cars, you may have to hold a winning lottery ticket to be able to afford one. There may be a run on the machines before the tariff deadline to avoid an increase. The Q45A we tested starts at $59,350. All you need add is $450 for freight. For that sum you get dual air bags, all-season tires, tinted glass, power tilt and...

...When the Q45 is ordered with the full-active suspension system, Infiniti throws in traction control. There comes a time when engineers have to assess a car's performance with the environment in which it will be driven. In Germany, where there are no speed limits on the Autobahn, maybe one could make a case for the full-active suspension. But here, when one legally can go only 65 mph, the system isn't needed. That said, I found the test car to be agile and athletic and able to remain poised under all circumstances. But I found the same traits on the standard model, too. And it seemed faster...
