...Early returns indicate that Hyundai’s redesigned 2011 Elantra can compete with the best of them in a fiercely contested market.
More horsepower, some of the best mileage figures in its class, added standard features, and a whole new look have consumers and competitors alike sitting up and taking notice...

...Gone are the days of cheap plastic interiors. The Elantra has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and soft-touch surfaces including leather door-panel inserts. In terms of storage, the Elantra clearly isn't like a minivan with every nook and cranny designed to store all the stuff families tend to lug around. However, there were just enough storage spaces to keep the necessities well-organized and safely contained. Door pockets were large enough to stash my iPad and extra water bottles for our long seven-hour road trip. The center console had a small storage bin as well as an armrest that could...

...Other exterior features include: 15-inch steel wheels standard; 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels optional Standard heated side mirrors Available automatic headlights Available power moonroof Interior The emphasis on design continues in the cabin, which takes on a much different look than before. Sweeping dashboard lines and a center console that rises to meet the dash give the interior a modern appearance. A high-resolution touch-screen navigation system that incorporates a backup camera is optional for both trims, and the screen is mounted high on the dash. Other interior features include:...

...No matter which engine/transmission combo you choose, you'll end up with impressive fuel economy. EPA estimates are 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined. Safety: The 2011 Hyundai Elantra's list of standard safety features includes traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes, active front head restraints, front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags that cover both rows. In Edmunds brake testing, an Elantra Limited needed 125 feet to stop from 60 mph -- a good distance for the segment. Interior Design and Special Features: The Elantra's interior features a curved...

...The cabin is unequivocally modern — but not at the expense of occupant comfort. For a small car, the front of the Elantra's cabin feels spacious, easily accommodating my 6-foot-1 frame. The standard height-adjustable driver's seat is a nice feature, and the seat went far enough back for me to sit comfortably. However, the steering wheel's optional telescoping feature doesn't extend far enough for taller people. Besides giving the cabin a unique look, the slender center panel opens up more room for your knees than many conventional designs offer. You don't feel cramped in this car, and...

...The traffic alerts told us that our Memorial Day weekend getaway was going to be a long haul with a pair of Friday afternoon accidents on the Mass. Pike westbound. That day of cemetery visiting around Boston and fighting traffic on the Pike wasn't conducive to putting up high mpg numbers. However, the rest of the weekend driving wasn't as congested and left us with a 35.2 average. Coming home, in lighter traffic, we returned 42.5 mpg — with apologies to the Western Express 18-wheeler we drafted for 10 miles on I-495. A series of longish trips left the positive impression that the...

...The Elantra's low starting price means that a lot of features aren't standard. Optional features include air conditioning and cruise control. These features and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel are part of an options package, which my test car had. My test car also had the optional Navigation Package, which adds a navigation system, backup camera and automatic headlights. In the backseat, my two boys had plenty of legroom in this compact car. They found their cupholders in the fold-down armrest, and I made use of the front row's two cupholders near the center console. The Elantra is a...

Why should I also consider these?

The Toyota Corolla used to be the gold standard among compact sedans.

It’s never been a very impressive performer, but in more recent years its stark interior appointments and hard, dull plastics have dragged it to the back of the pack.

The Kia Forte feels somewhat sportier than the Elantra but not quite as tight and refined inside.

While the Forte is a product of the same parent company, it’s a half-generation behind the Elantra in some respects—and assembled at a different facility altogether.

The Volkswagen Jetta, which is was redesigned for 2011, now has a standard 115-hp four-cylinder engine that’s sluggish yet doesn’t return impressive fuel economy either.

The Ford Focus is quite well-equipped and drives better than it looks (it’s due to be replaced next year), while the all-new Chevrolet Cruze has an especially roomy interior and an especially refined, mature feel; it can also come with an EPA highway rating of up to 42 mpg in Cruze Eco trim.

2011 Ford Focus
2011 Kia Forte
The 2011 Kia Forte exemplifies the new direction of Kia, with a simple, elegant style, unexpected levels of refinement, and lots of value for the money.

2011 Toyota Corolla
The 2011 Toyota Corolla is spacious, safe, and well-equipped; but if you're looking for excitement or inspiration, it's not here.

2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan
The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta steps back in tech time and lowers its German street cred—but still delivers a better driving feel and more back-seat room than many other compact sedans.
