1997 Honda CR-V Overview

...Why replace something that is working - even after 150,000 miles? After nine years, prices are going to vary according to condition. Unless you are looking for a "fix-up" set of wheels, the going price is around $6,000 to $8,225.The CR-V is unique to other SUV-type vehicles. Instead of using a truck-style frame, the CR-V uses unibody construction over a frame with four-wheel independent suspension. The Honda "Real-Time" 4WD package is installed along with the standard 2.0-liter, 126-hp engine. One of the few drawbacks is that the CR-V comes only with a 4-speed automatic transmission.Reports...

...The other is driven by the rear wheels via the rear differential. In operation, when the front and back wheels turn at the same speed, as on dry pavement, there is no hydraulic fluid pressure differences generated between the two pumps. If the front wheels begin to slip, the front pump begins to generate more pressure than the rear. The resulting hydraulic pressure opens a valve that feeds pressure to a multi-disc clutch. The clutch hooks up the propeller shaft to the rear differential and the differential feeds th e power to the rear wheels. The greater the amount of front wheel slippage...

...Fit and finish is equal to the highly-acclaimed Accord. The CR-V offers comfortable chairs for its occupants, each of which has excellent visibility and the ability to recline when the trip grows long. The CR-V's cargo capacity is an outstanding 67.2 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded. Available in only one trim-level, the CR-V is surprisingly well-equipped. Air conditioning with a micron filtration system is standard, as are power windows, power door locks, rear window wiper and defogger, AM/FM stereo, and a folding picnic table that doubles as a cargo area cover. Options include...

...In fact, there isn't anything quite like it in the sport-ute segment for 20 grand if you consider the size, the performance an ll the equipment you get on the CR-V. She: The only bit of confusion consumers might encounter is what kind of vehicle is the CR-V? On the outside, it looks like a competitor to the RAV4, but the CR-V is actually 14 inches longer. It's also almost a foot longer than the Jeep Cherokee. Honda is real sensitive about that. They even sent us a fax that said "NOT A MINI-SUV" in huge letters under product description. So I get the impression they're expecting an argument...

...The herring-bone, cloth fabric looks lively without being gaudy. In addition to the cupholders molded into the little table between the seats, another pair slides out of the dash. There is a 12-volt power outlet by the back door, and various hooks for securing items in back. As mentioned, the cargo load floor lifts out to form a small picnic table, and a waterproof well under it can be used as a cooler or for extra storage. The two-piece tailgate has glass that pivots at the top and a side-opening door. So far, the CR-V has been an unqualified sales success. Look for it to only get better...

...I like its interior better than that of the competition from Toyota and others. The CR-V provides excellent room for front and rear passengers. The vehicle may be small on the outside, but the use of four-wheel independent suspension opens up space for a roomy interior. None of the rear suspension components intrude much inside. The front bucket and split rear folding seats are firm, supportive and comfortable. I liked the thick, durable upholstery tha covers the seats. I also liked the perforated material used on the interior door-mounted armrests and column-mounted shift lever. It gave the...

...It handles better than anything I've driven in the mini sport-ute group, including the estimable RAV4. Also, the CR-V is longer, wider, and higher (floor to roof) than the RAV4, carries more cargo than the RAV4 (27.5 cubic feet compared with the RAV4's 26.8 cubic feet), and it has a gutsier engine. The CR-V is equipped with a 2-liter, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, double overhead-cam engine rated 130 horsepower at 5,500 rpm with torque rated 135 pound-feet at 4,300 rpm. By comparison, the RAV4 is equipped with a 2-liter, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, double overhead-cam engine rated 120 horsepower at 5,400...

...A final list of options--beyond the availability of anti-lock brakes--has not been written. Performance specifications have yet to be recorded in English. We hope little was lost in our translating performance numbers from a speedometer that only recorded kilometers. Yet what is set forms an impressive value package. Standard CR-Vs will be all-wheel, with five-doors and equipped with passenger- and driver-side air bags, automatic transmission, air conditioning and a four-speaker sound system. Also cruise control, power door locks and mirrors, adjustable steering, rear wiper and washer--and...

..." and green for "reverse" and all the forward gears for a quick visual clue at night; visor vanity mirrors, though they aren't lit; perhaps the most spacious headroom front and rear of any vehicle on the market other than a full-size pickup truck; a spare tire mounted on the back that's low enough not to interfere with rear vision; easy-to-fold-over-and-down rear seats that sit flat to increase stowage capacity; location of the parking brake handle low to the floor and flush against the right side of the driver's seat where it doesn't get in the way of things; power plugs front and rear so...

...Oh, I did think of one thing I dislike - the CR-V's name. It says nothing. So I'm going to think of all those great details and rename it Cary's Recreational Vehicle. After the actor. It'll be our little secret. 1997 Honda CR-V Type: Front-engine, four-wheel drive, five-passenger sport-utility vehicle. Price: Base, $19,300; as tested, $20,781 (inc. $395 destination charge). What's new for '97: All-new for '97. Standard equipment: All-independent suspension, variable-assist power steering, air conditioning, micron air filtration system, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, tachometer...
