2008 ford mustang Professional Edmunds Review

...That power gets to the ground through either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission; all Mustangs are rear-wheel drive. The GT with a manual transmission can run to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds and clear the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds. Safety: Four-wheel disc brakes and front seat side airbags are standard on all Mustangs. Antilock brakes and traction control are optional on the V6 models and standard on the GT. Neither stability control nor full-length head curtain airbags are available. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests, the 2008 Ford Mustang...

...Fuel mileage is paltry, as expected. The only available transmission is a five-speed manual, which shifts well enough, though a six-speed would be appreciated. DRIVABILITY: Sports-car drivers can deride Mustang's retro solid rear axle if they want, but I think the ride and handling are sporty and fun. The ride gets harsh over rough surfaces, and the rear will dance on rippled surfaces, but it's all in the game. Plenty more-sophisticated cars fail to mete out a fraction of the Mustang's driving character. Rude and crude and plenty enjoyable, with something of a vintage feel. Bullitt comes with...

...The car is de-badged: no chrome pony, no Ford ovals. The only identifying marking is the word Bullitt in the cross-hair design on the faux filler cap in back. The car is gorgeous, with no scoops, spoilers or ventilating air dams. The bit of genius in the car, though, is the wheel-and-tire package: five-spoke cast-aluminum "Euroflange" wheels -- whatever that means -- in a gray satin finish, with machined rims of bright alloy. These wheels are a convincing imitation of period-correct Cragar mag wheels. Wrapped around these rims are relatively tall 50-series performance tires. The designers...

Review: 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

...Inside, the seats boast Ford's new soy foam — a touch of environmental assuagement while roasting the rear tires, we suppose. The interior is a pleasant place, but the '60s-era font on the instruments is more fun than readable, and the "BULLITT" badge in the center of the steering wheel would have been better served with a simple running horse. The swirled aluminum dash panel seems out-of-era to us, more quaintly 1930's than hipster '60s.A Fine PerformanceWith an all-aluminum engine and a just slightly more aggressive chassis tune, the Bullitt handles far more eagerly than its supposed...

...The cloth top operated easily and sealed tightly, and when up, managed to keep out most of the road noise. And unlike some convertibles, there's an actual trunk back there, even with the top down. On the road, the Mustang's elderly suspension design does not absorb bumps as well as more modern cars with independent suspension, but a 150-mile drive in one night was not at all uncomfortable. The test car had optional leather-covered seats, and considering that at one time Mustang seats were less comfortable than a wooden church pew, I have no complaints. If you want more performance, the...

...drivers can choose from two trim levels (Deluxe and Premium) with either a 210-horsepower V6 or 300-horsepower V8 engine (badged as the GT), as well as coupe and convertible models. No matter which trim level, engine, options, or packages drivers choose, however, they'll all get a sports car that's instantly recognizable, thanks to its wide, low stance, distinctive grille with the rearing pony planted firmly in the center, C-shaped side indentations, and large tires in flared wheel wells. Its a look that's both nostalgic and modern, and one that never fails to turn heads on the road.Ford adds...

...but I drove it the way it was supposed to be driven (meaning hard and fast), so I was never close to those numbers, averaging 13 mpg. There's one thing I didn't like about the GT500. The smooth transmission felt more like it was designed with fuel efficiency than performance. When wanting a little extra boost, I often dropped two gears instead of one to push the engine closer to its power curve -- which is why I ended up with lower- than-normal mileage numbers. But it was fun, and I was willing to pay for it (or at least expense it). The ride is stiff but was never too firm for a highway...

..."Colder air reduces intake losses," Randle said. "The new cold-air intake has shown a reduction in rise over ambient temperature from 50 degrees down to 17 degrees . That equates to more horsepower and more torque in all driving conditions." A special adaptive-spark ignition system is new as well. Ford says this system "can sense, within a few seconds, what type of fuel is being injected into the motor" and then can adjust the ignition timing to provide maximum torque. This allows the engine to run n regular- or premium-grade fuel, although Ford says premium fuel will give the best...

...Fortunately, there was no one immediately in front of me, as I would have put a Le Mans stripe into their trunk. Inside the King of the Road, the driver feels like royalty. The leather interior features embroidered headrests and a 40th-anniversary dash plate at the top of the center stack. Ford has added a few luxury items as well such as ambient lighting (with seven color choices), HID headlamps and an optional Shaker 1000 stereo and navigation system. But the King is not about luxury. It's about power -- and this is absolutely the most powerful Mustang in the family. It's the kind of power...

...Even the pony on the grille was pulled off the '68 fastback. And Ford recreated the original, making the '08 Bullitt the only horseless Mustang, giving the grille a satin aluminum trim. The only spot where you find the word Bullitt on the exterior is on the trunk -- in a huge, circular badge. The car's entire exterior is subtle. Most people won't know what you've got when you drive up -- so you'll have to tell them. The special 18-inch aluminum wheels also remain subdued. Even the carbon metallic brake pads and calibers are painted gray so they blend in. McQueen played an undercover cop in...

Why should I also consider these?

Honestly, since 2002 when the last Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird rolled off the assembly line, the Ford Mustang hasn't had a direct competitor.

While some might compare it to front-wheel-drive coupes like the Scion tC or Pontiac G6, those are apples to oranges.

With the introduction of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8, finally, the Mustang has a rear-wheel-drive pony car competitor, even if the Dodge only competes with the expensive Shelby GT500 and GT500KR models--for now.

Next year (2009), Mustang will face off against a full line of Dodge Challenger models (V-6 and V-8 models), as well as the 2010 Camaro.

Get ready to rumble!
