...The city number is a full 8 mpg better than the Camry Hybrid, although 7 mpg shy of the Prius. As always, your mileage will vary greatly depending on driving conditions and how much lead lines your shoes. Safety: The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and rear parking sensors. A blind-spot warning system and rearview camera are optional. At our test track, the Fusion Hybrid stopped from 60 mph in a tidy 126 feet, which is the best distance we've recorded among non-luxury hybrid cars...

...The hybrid can have an optional navigation system that features Sirius Travel Link technology. In addition to traffic information, Travel Link can show local gas prices and movie times. A backup camera is also offered, and the Fusion Hybrid comes standard with a 110-volt household power plug. Under the Hood The Fusion Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. A continuously variable automatic transmission sends power to the wheels. This is a fairly conventional setup for a hybrid, but the Fusion Hybrid's system differs from current competitors in a key way:...

Flash Drive: 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid

...Immediately upon starting up the Fusion Hybrid, the graphically engaging dashboard lights up, becoming the centerpiece of the car. It is easy to learn how to drive the car efficiently, as the mpg gauge and the gas/battery usage meters assist the driver to get the most out of the vehicle. While I averaged 41 mpg in mixed driving, I hit 51 mpg on a flat commute. The car has plenty of room for four adults, and the trunk is spacious enough for a family vacation. My only complaint was that the rear console power outlet was falling apart and looked like it was cheaply manufactured. – Joe...

...Gauges & Graphics I'll let the pictures do most of the talking, but it's no stretch to say Ford sets new standards for instrument-panel functionality in this car. The best example: Ford's Vehicle Power Gauge, which is one of more than a dozen configurable indicators. It shows just how much power is available in EV mode, as well as the point — which rises and falls depending on battery charge — when the engine will switch on. Instead of feather-footing around town trying to maximize electric-only acceleration, and incurring the wrath of drivers in your wake, the Fusion Hybrid gives a clear...

...Interior details improve The other big improvement on the Fusion was Ford's attention to detail on the interior. My Sport test vehicle arrived with a shocking blue interior -- almost too blue to be true -- and included all of the accoutrements you'd expect and a few you wouldn't. Sync, Ford's infotainment system, continues to improve and remains the single best voice-operated, cell-phone working, iPod-playing, 911-dialing and optional navigation reading system available. Actually, when connected to Sirius Travel Link, it's even better than I make it out to be. Ford added or refined even more...

...The cubbies and storage are abundant and functional. I particularly liked that most of the Fusion Hybrid's compartments are padded with either a grippy rubber or fuzzy cloth. No rattles here. In the backseat, there are two cupholders housed in the center armrest. The cargo area is ample, which in hybrid terms is really more like Galore in our MotherProof.com rating system. This is because most hybrids use the cargo area to store the batteries. Ford finagled its battery storage so I could fit a full load of groceries in the cargo area. No sweat. What about mamas with strollers? Umbrella types...

...* Oil change intervals are expected to be at 10,000 miles because the engine does only half the work in this hybrid configuration. Ford's people are proud of the Fusion and that it has its best-in-class mileage figures despite being 200 pounds heavier and not as aerodynamic as its chief rival, the Camry Hybrid. Cherian laughed when he was asked if the Fusion Hybrid was a quick response to Washington's call for more fuel-efficient vehicles. "This has been a three-year project," he said. "We [auto engineers] are aware of all that's going on; however, we have to keep our focus on designing ways...

...The basics are all good. Exterior design, accented by an edgily sculpted, three-bar grille, is attractive. Overall fit and finish and interior ergonomics -- the way things are designed for ease of reach and sight -- are excellent. And the Fusion is an information lover's delight, much more so than any hybrid I've driven. There is what Ford calls a "smart gauge" instrument cluster. It has color liquid-crystal display screens on either side of the car's speedometer. The driver can select from among four information packages, most of which monitor gas-electric power flows and exchanges, and one...
