...Opting for the automatic drops the highway estimate to 33 mpg. Safety: Six airbags are standard on all Focus models, including front-seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags for both front- and rear-seat occupants. For 2010, antilock brakes and stability control are now standard on all trim levels. Also new for the 2010 Focus is Ford's programmable MyKey system, which allows parents to specify limits for vehicle speed and stereo volume for their teenage drivers. In government crash tests, the 2010 Ford Focus sedan earned four stars (out of a possible five) for its protection of front...

CarGurus' Review for 2010 ford focus

...The 2010 Ford Focus provides one of the bright spots of the American auto industry.
Although some reviewers and owners find its exterior and interior design unexciting,
the Focus delivers in a number of key areas and receives positive marks from owners for its fuel economy, handling, exterior styling, and interior design.
The Focus faces stiff competition in the compact sedan segment, but owners looking for a capable, confident sedan from an American automaker should give the Focus strong consideration...

...The seats are comfortable, but they don't offer a lot of bolstering to keep you in place during hard cornering, and the seat heaters only have an on/off switch rather than the preferred low/high or graduated settings. My SES coupe had a height-adjustable driver's seat; the overall driving position was decent, though it would have been better if there was a telescoping steering column (the Focus only has a tilt feature, which is odd because the previous generation offered a tilt/telescoping wheel). With the seat far enough back to comfortably work the pedals, I had to reach forward more than I...

Why should I also consider these?

To put it bluntly, the 2010 Ford Focus is an aging design, up against some very tough, well-updated competition.

TheCarConnection.com recently pitted South Korea's Kia Forte against the 2010 Ford Focus and the 2010 Honda Civic, and while it was a close competition, they outperformed the Ford in certain aspects.

The Civic also offers more variety than the Focus, with multiple powertrains, including hybrid and natural gas.

The 2010 Focus also has to compete against the Mazda3, a perennial enthusiast favorite for its handling and build quality.

Comparatively, the Hyundai Elantra and Dodge Caliber aren't quite up to par compared to the other members in this pack in overall refinement and style.

However, since there is no hatchback or wagon model for the Focus, the impressive Mazda3, the Toyota Matrix (which is based on the Corolla), and the Honda Fit could all present viable alternatives to the Focus.

2010 Kia Forte
The 2010 Kia Forte is a strong contender in every way—a surprisingly good-looking, enjoyable-to-drive car that will hold the budget down.

2008 Dodge Caliber
The Caliber has a very practical layout and quite a few innovative features to get excited about, but it's lacking in driving enjoyment or refinement--even compared to its low-priced competition.

2004 Honda Civic Classic
2008 Hyundai Elantra
The 2008 Hyundai Elantra doesn’t have a lot of personality, but it’s the undeniable practical choice.

2008 Mazda MAZDA3
The 2008 Mazda 3 is easily one of the best compact cars for sale in the United States.
