2011 Ford Fiesta Overview

...like suspension tuning and more comfortable seats to accommodate the …ahem… “unique” driving conditions on this continent, and while they do little for overall handling, they are a welcome boon to overall comfort. Here, we’ll get the choice of a 5-door hatchback or sedan, in any of five trim levels, all powered by the same 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder (I4) engine, putting out a frightening 119 hp – enough to rocket the little guy to 60 mph in just over 9 seconds. But the big difference is in how we’ve decided to define “economy car.” When the term was first introduced, it...

...Convenience options include cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, keypad keyless entry, push-button engine start and even remote start. Entertainment features start with a standard analog MP3 player input jack and range all the way to a Sync-enabled premium stereo with steering-wheel controls and Sirius Satellite Radio. Under the Hood The Fiesta's engine is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder, which teams with either a five-speed stick or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Technically an automated manual, the automatic is a technology that's begun to spread among larger cars, bringing the...

...My kids had plenty of legroom in the second row, but I had both front seats positioned all the way forward. With only three cupholders — two if you use one to hold a cell phone like I did — the Fiesta will force you to be diligent about tossing any old beverages to make way for the new one. The kids will have to learn to cope with just one cupholder for the backseat. Technically, the Fiesta can hold five passengers, but I'd stick with four. The second row's center seat is tiny. The only person that would fit in the seat would be a small child, but that's not possible since they'd have to...

...Poorly maintained highway sections send the Fiesta into an up-and-down rhythm that's sure to fatigue road-trippers, and sudden dips in the road can bottom the car out unsettlingly. If you find the Fiesta too firm, check out the Versa; it has one of the smoother rides in this class. The Inside With sharply raked contours and cell-phone-like center controls, the cabin is big on style. It's a good thing there's substance to back that up. Materials are handsome for this class, with high-rent stereo and climate controls. It's a step in the right direction for Ford, whose self-described...

2011 Ford Fiesta — Flash Drive

...While it's not a sports car, the chassis is well-balanced, the steering is precise and the 1.6-liter engine delivers plenty of power. And Ford's Easyfuel capless fuel filler is the slickest feature we didn't know we were missing. –Mike MeredithI've always been envious of the great-looking cars Ford sells in Europe. Now that the new Fiesta has arrived in the U.S., I am envious no more. The Fiesta looks sharp with its sleek lines and unique paint; our tester stood out from the crowd with its Lime Squeeze finish. Dash controls are nicely laid out — a row of buttons on the center console...

Why should I also consider these?

The 2011 Ford Fiesta is Ford's attempt to plant a first-rate competitor into a garden dominated by Asian brands.

While the Honda Fit is priced a bit higher than other entries, it remains the car the Fiesta has to beat; the Fit gets good ratings for its sprightly handling, its uber-flexible and spacious interior, and a solid feel behind the wheel.

While the Nissan Versa is priced quite low, it sacrifices features to get there.

It also rides and handles like a larger, heavier car, lacking the nimble handling that's a pleasure of the best subcompacts.

The Hyundai Accent handles well but isn't particularly comfortable at high speeds.

Finally, the Scion xD feels sporty and offers features galore, but lacks the Fiesta's jaunty styling.

Avoid the aging Chevrolet Aveo, which will be replaced next year.

2010 Chevrolet Aveo
The 2010 Chevrolet Aveo and Aveo5 are worth considering if the bulk of your driving is done around the city—but there are plenty of better small-car options that don't cost much more.

2010 Honda Fit
Look beyond the appearance of the 2010 Honda Fit, which admittedly won’t quicken pulses. Honda nails the rest with the peppy, spacious, and frugal Fit.

2010 Hyundai Accent
If frugal simplicity and penny-pinching is what you want, the 2010 Hyundai Accent has it.

2010 Nissan Versa
The 2010 Nissan Versa is one of the best-value cars available on the market. Just remember that at its cheapest, you won’t be getting too much in the way of features.

2010 Scion xD
The 2010 Scion xD is a substantial, feature-laden choice in the econobox class, and buyers can customize to their heart's content.
