2011 Ford Explorer Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...It also wasn't easy to heave a 40-pound bag of dog food over the rear bumper; load-in height was at my waist. Features The Explorer comes in just three trim levels, which keeps things simple in the features department. The base model, called simply Explorer, starts at $28,190. That's about $1,000 less than the Traverse and CX-9. For that, you get cruise control, the MyFord system mentioned above, four 12-volt plugs, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a six-speaker sound system with an MP3 jack, and tinted second- and third-row windows. But you also get unfashionable black door handles, side... |

2011 Ford Explorer — Flash DriveSource: MSN Autos...The Explorer is a big vehicle, and it feels big on the road, although it does drive well for its size. The Explorer is responsive and well-controlled, with good power from a 3.5-liter 290-horsepower V6 engine and a thoroughly modern 6-speed automatic. The Explorer is intended as a modern family vehicle that splits the difference between a minivan and a traditional SUV, and Ford has done a good job at hitting that target. – Mike MeredithFord has been building Explorers since the early 1990s, but the 2011 model completely redefines the SUV. The new Explorer looks great, and at first glance it... |

The Explorer isn't the only crossover to roll over the SUV Rubicon.
Technically, the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee are crossovers, since they're intended mostly for on-road driving, though those fantastic vehicles have a bit more off-road prowess than today's Explorer does.
We can't figure out what happened to the Honda Pilot, which had been a top pick in the class, but now has less flexibility and a more plasticky interior, not to mention over-the-top SUV cues that look cartoonish for a Honda.
We like the GM crossover triplets, and the GMC Acadia may be our favorite of all: it's a little narrower than an Explorer, but the traditional ute looks are married to a fine V-6 drivetrain and on Denali models, a luxe interior.
