2011 ford explorer Professional Edmunds Review
Source: Edmunds

...In Edmunds testing, a 4WD Explorer went from zero to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds -- average for the class. Ford-estimated fuel economy with two-wheel drive is 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway -- also average for the class. Towing capacity is 5,000 pounds. Safety: Every 2011 Ford Explorer comes standard with stability and traction control, trailer sway control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and MyKey, which allows parents to specify limits for vehicle speed and stereo volume. The Explorer's stability control system also includes Ford's Curve Control, which can reduce the vehicle's speed if it...

...A rearview camera was the key element in a $2,075 Ford Rapid Spec option package that pushed our XLT's price from $34,155 to $36,230. The Explorer is available in three trim lines — base, XLT, and Limited and either two-wheel or four-wheel-drive. That rearview camera eased parking in the vehicle. Ford's styling cues leave little doubt that the Explorer is a close relative of the Edge. From the outside it doesn't look all that big. Behind the wheel, it does, however, so the rear camera is a vital addition, especially for a guest driver. Often test vehicles are "fully loaded," but this...

...There are two cupholders in the third row as well as open storage bins that come in handy when you're hauling kids. While I loved using the voice controls with the MyFordTouch system, I hated just about everything else about it. It was overly complicated and distracting, and it felt like the bad old days when I would waste hours and hours fighting with Microsoft technology to make it do what it was supposed to. MyFord Touch was slow to react to my touch. In pressing the temperature up button five times, the system would think for a few seconds before deciding to finally react. My girls did...

CarGurus' Review for 2011 ford explorer

...Ford's all-new 2011 Explorer offers the kind of driving experience more and more customers are seeking.
While it lacks the brawn of the outgoing, truck-based model, the 2011 Explorer handles on-road driving with far more poise.
Innovative comfort and convenience features are abundant, and expected, given the 2011 Explorer's somewhat ambitious pricing...

...It also wasn't easy to heave a 40-pound bag of dog food over the rear bumper; load-in height was at my waist. Features The Explorer comes in just three trim levels, which keeps things simple in the features department. The base model, called simply Explorer, starts at $28,190. That's about $1,000 less than the Traverse and CX-9. For that, you get cruise control, the MyFord system mentioned above, four 12-volt plugs, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a six-speaker sound system with an MP3 jack, and tinted second- and third-row windows. But you also get unfashionable black door handles, side...

2011 Ford Explorer — Flash Drive
Source: MSN Autos

...The Explorer is a big vehicle, and it feels big on the road, although it does drive well for its size. The Explorer is responsive and well-controlled, with good power from a 3.5-liter 290-horsepower V6 engine and a thoroughly modern 6-speed automatic. The Explorer is intended as a modern family vehicle that splits the difference between a minivan and a traditional SUV, and Ford has done a good job at hitting that target. – Mike MeredithFord has been building Explorers since the early 1990s, but the 2011 model completely redefines the SUV. The new Explorer looks great, and at first glance it...

...Fold all the seats down and the Explorer's 80.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume is down 3 cubic feet from last year. Competing crossovers have more space. Under the Hood The Explorer's standard 3.5-liter V-6 makes 290 horsepower and 255 pounds-feet of torque; it works with front- or all-wheel drive. On front-wheel-drive models, the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 237 hp and 250 pounds-feet of torque. Ford says gas mileage with the V-6 has improved significantly over last year's 4.0-liter V-6, while the turbo four-cylinder posts comparable mileage to a V-6 family sedan...

Why should I also consider these?

The Explorer isn't the only SUV to cross the crossover Rubicon.

It could be argued that the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee are crossovers, since they're going to be driven primarily on pavement.

Both are brand-new this year, and they're fantastic efforts, with better off-road ability than the Explorer, if a touch less avant garde inside.

The Honda Pilot used to be the best crossover on the market, but the new version has a plasticky interior and over-the-top SUV styling that detracts from its driving feel.

The GMC Acadia is a bit narrower inside than the Explorer, and lacks the high-tech onslaught, but it's still a fine crossover with a tasteful balance of sport-ute looks and capabilities.

2011 Dodge Durango
The 2011 Dodge Durango is the anti-crossover, especially with the HEMI and R/T trim, and if the world still sanctioned big SUVs for small families, the Durango would be elbowing its way to driveways everywhere.

2011 GMC Acadia
The 2010 GMC Acadia strikes a good balance: more useful than full-size SUVs for passenger duty, yet a lot better-looking than a minivan.

2011 Honda Pilot
If you can get past the garish grille and overwrought look, the 2011 Honda Pilot is a fine family vehicle, with minivan-like interior space and decent performance.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is one capable, good-looking crossover—and a welcome sign of life from Chrysler.
