...The option group includes premium leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, a Reverse Sensing System, a hybrid energy display and a navigation system. Mary Ann Wright, director of sustainable mobility technologies and hybrid vehicle programs, said the Escape Hybrid yields a 50 percent fuel-usage improvement in city and highway driving. Ford claims a front-drive Escape Hybrid can yield 36 mpg in city driving and travel up to 500 miles on a single tank of gas. The Escape Hybrid also meets Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle requirements. Ford promises acceleration that rivals...

The Ford Escape has done well in government crash testing, earning a perfect five stars for the driver in frontal impacts and four stars for the front passenger. ...According to Ford, the hybrid powerplant produces 70 percent better fuel economy in the city than a traditional gas-fueled four-cylinder Escape. That may be true, but some drivers expressed disappointment at not getting the fuel economy they had hoped for, particularly during city driving. Ford notes that the Escape Hybrid should average about 30 miles per gallon, which is acceptable for an SUV but not impressive for a hybrid, and not a substantial improvement over, say, a standard gas-powered sedan. Others noted that the Escape Hybrid can feel nose-heavy, thanks to its sightly heavier body...

...in-dash CD changer and six speakers; front fog lights; air conditioning with privacy glass; six-way power driver's seat; cruise control; roof rack; tilt steering wheel; floor shifter with center console; tire-pressure monitoring system; premium cloth front bucket and rear bench seats; driver-information center; roof side rails; four-wheel independent suspension; and an anti-theft system. Extras on our tester included the navigation/audiophile stereo system upgrade ($1,995); the safety package ($595), which added the front seat side air bags and the side-canopy air bag system; an exterior...

...Safety Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes are standard. Side-impact airbags are optional, as are side curtain airbags that stay inflated longer during a rollover. An electronic stability system, however, is not available. Driving Impressions When driving the Escape Hybrid, you're seldom aware that you're in anything other than a conventional Escape. Acceleration is at least as eager as that of a four-cylinder-powered Escape and likely closer to that of the V-6 model. Totally smooth takeoffs are credited to the easy-operating transmission, but you do feel a slight jerk when the gasoline engine...

...Arguably, the first question is: Do I want to spend the extra money for hybrid technology when a similar, four-cylinder vehicle might serve me nearly as well? Good question. And that similar vehicle might be a traditional, gas-powered Ford Escape SUV. The best gas mileage estimate on a four-cylinder, gas-powered 2007 Escape with a manual transmission is 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. That compares with 36/31 mpg for the tested Escape Hybrid (the higher city mileage is a result of the electric motor doing the heavy lifting in slow city traffic). That difference of 12 mpg on the...

...The building of the Escape shifted from Japan to Taiwan for the 2007 model, and many other changes followed as well.
Externally, changes include a new grille, head- and tail-lights, and bumpers. For an SUV (albeit a small SUV), the car gets excellent mileage: 23/26 city/highway.
The feel of the engine may reflect this economy, as the base 2.3L engine generates only 150 horsepower at 5800 rpm.
Regardless, the little SUV is a fun one to drive as you can zip among the bigger machines while still having a fairly commanding view of the road...
