...a six-speed manual gearbox (the only transmission available) and can catapult the Viper to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and through the quarter-mile in only 11.8 seconds. Not much on the planet can touch this Dodge. Safety: Apart from the mandatory front airbags (which now have multistage deployment and occupant-sensing technology), safety equipment on the Dodge Viper is sparse. There are no side airbags, no traction control and no stability control. Massive four-wheel antilock disc brakes assure rapid stops from 60 mph in just 104 feet. Interior Design and Special Features: Although the...

...Viper gets the nod for the snake badging and the more descriptive name -- as well as louder exhaust rumble. Though we suspect the neighbors preferred the 'Vette on that count. The 'Vette coupe starts at $45,170 and includes, AM/FM stereo with CD player, MP3 format, XM satellite radio, dual zone air conditioning, leather seats, anti-lock brakes, power driver's seat/locks/windows/mirrors, the latter also heated. Best options are a head-up display that shows the speedometer reading on the lower windshield in front of the driver as part of a $4,505 package, a Z51 performance package with...

Flash Drive: 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10

...The eruption is enough to scare small children. And that’s nothing compared to the fury of full-throttle driving. With 600 horses on tap, acceleration is ferocious — and with no electronic safety nets, driving a Viper requires your full attention. This is not a car for the timid or inexperienced, but there is certainly nothing like it on the road today. — Perry SternIn the flesh, the Viper looks insanely low, wide and menacing, with hood creases so sharp you’ll think twice before leaning on it. The steering is razor sharp and provides stellar feedback. The obscenely wide rear tires...

...Once the V-10 cooks up, louvers in the hood let the heat escape straight up, sometimes rippling your forward view when sitting still. I'm not saying this hampers visibility; it's just totally cool. I'll admit that after a week I longed for a cupholder, but I respect Dodge's exclusion of one. I'm a little disappointed by the lack of cruise control. It makes all kinds of sense, really, because it would be easy to go into a turn and lose control before there was time to shut it off and take over. Still, I find cruise helps me keep from inadvertently creeping above the speed limit. With the...

...gets the power out through the newly designed rear wheels. The carefully reworked suspension has increased spring rates and front and rear shock compression, decreased rear low-speed rebound, added a new solid rear anti-roll bar, and tweaked camber and castor rates. A modified hood features extra cooling slots that extract more engine heat and also act to increase downforce. All this adds up to a 202-mph coupe and a 197-mph roadster - with the top down! The 0-60 blast is over in 3.5 seconds. Driving the Viper requires 100 percent attention - one reviewer figured that's why there are no...

...8.4 liters — slightly more than before thanks to a 1-millimeter increase in the engine's bore — and makes 600 hp and 560 pounds-feet of torque. That's 90 hp and 25 pounds-feet of torque more than the previous 8.3-liter V-10 made. The engine runs on 91-octane gasoline. The V-10 has variable exhaust-valve timing and its cylinder heads are new. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and Dodge says clutch-pedal effort has been lessened thanks to a new twin-disc clutch, but I didn't find it especially heavy before. The automaker says the Viper SRT10 can reach 60 mph from a standstill in...

...The extra stiff suspension, designed for ripping through turns, also leaves the ride rough, which is fine for a car like this. On the highways around Detroit, the Viper bounced over concrete seams like a 25-cent store pony. I liked how Dodge improved the exhaust cooler. The pipes go directly under the door sill, where the exhaust exits in front of the rear tire. In the previous generation, the sill got so hot when you crawled out of the Viper, you wondered whether you were going to burn yourself. I never encountered that problem with the new model. Toasty warm is fine, grilling temperature...

...On the main straightaway, you can get the Viper to 148 mph in fourth gear before the rev limiter kicks in, and there's really no time to shift to fifth before a hard right turn. It's pretty amazing that the car goes 148 mph, and there are still two gears left. Handling is like driving on flypaper, but when the Viper's rear end finally does break loose, it does so with more warning, less drama than it used to, thanks in part to the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 radials. Brakes are superb. The six-speed Tremec manual transmission does not shift as smoothly as I'd like, but it never has. A new...

Why should I also consider these?

While some may think the 2008 Dodge Viper competes against garden-variety Corvettes, the only Corvette that really stands up to Chrysler's snake is the mighty Z06 edition.

The Viper outpowers the Corvette Z06 by 95 horsepower, but the Corvette is nearly as quick--not that anyone really cares about second place in this duel.

While the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette provides plenty of impressive performance to dream and/or brag about, this car is not a one-trick pony. If ever there were a practical sportscar, this is it.
