...On these trim levels, buyers have a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The EPA gives an AWD Journey a 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway fuel economy estimate, about average for this segment. Safety: Every 2009 Journey includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, rollover-sensing stability control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags for all three rows. A rearview camera and hands-free communication system are optional, as are very handy built-in second-row child booster seats, a first in this segment. Interior Design and Special Features: Although the 2009 Dodge Journey...

...or, even better, a getting-larger-every-year convertible child safety seat. - Removable flashlight: This is a great feature for finding that last square of chocolate you lost in the dirt and need in order to make the last s'more of the night (hush - that's not nearly as icky as that nasty toothpick). Like my dad's Swiss Army knife, the Journey offers all that capability in a package that's pretty bland in the style department. Form must follow function, though, and I can accept this crossover's plainness for all its shockingly functional features. It's campy, even if you just use it for...

...Obviously, the mileage varies by engine choice. The 235-horsepower V-6 gets 16 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The 173-horsepower four-cylinder engine reaches 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway. Both are not eyebrow-raising numbers. With either engine, the Journey offers a surprisingly quiet smooth ride. The rack-and-pinion steering gives you good road feel and when flying through back desert roads, the Journey buckled down and bit through the curves. It's fun to drive. And when was the last time you said that about a minivan? In the crossover world, the Journey looks more...

Flash Drive: 2009 Dodge Journey SXT AWD

...There is even a beverage cooler in the glove box, which is a neat feature for road trips. Around town, I was able to generate only 19 mpg in mixed driving. Also, it would be nice if steering-wheel controls for the audio system were available on the base version of the car. The Journey can get the job done, but don't be surprised to see the price reach $30K if you check off some of the seating and entertainment options. –Joe ChulickI've never liked the term "crossover" to describe cars. I suppose a crossover is a compromise between an SUV and a minivan (itself a compromise between a car and...

...Cloth seats are standard on the SE model, but optional is Chrysler's new YES Essentials stain- and odor-resistant upholstery. But that fabric was standard on our SXT model. Leather upholstery is standard on the R/T. Other standard features include Chrysler's Chill Zone, which uses the air-conditioning system to help keep four beverage cans or bottles cold in the upper level of the glove box; and an AM/FM/compact-disc audio system with six-disc changer, MP3 playback and Sirius satellite radio. There also is a jack to allow connection of an iPod or other audio device. A navigation system is...

...Expect better mileage from the four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive version, at an EPA estimated 19 city and 25 highway, but I fear performance may be inadequate. DRIVABILITY: Journey seemed sure-footed, though neither steering nor handling were terribly responsive. The ride is well-cushioned, even on rough surfaces. Journey performed best at highway speeds, quiet and unflustered with scant road or wind noise. Features in the R/T include antilock disc brakes; electronic stability control, traction control and roll mitigation; rear-view camera; and full-length side airbags. STYLING: A handsome...

CarGurus' Review for 2009 dodge journey

...Emphasizing convenience and functionality over performance and luxury features,
the new 2009 Dodge Journey should appeal to busy, budget-minded families seeking a well-equipped family hauler for around-town commuting.
The Journey comes equipped with a number of nifty and innovative features, but lacks in key performance areas.
However, safety features are among the best in its class, which should add to its appeal to couples and family drivers...

...Standard stuff include anti-lock brakes, side-curtain air bags, roll mitigation control, remote engine start, power windows/locks/mirrors (heated), heated seats upfront with power for the driver, three power plugs and 115-volt outlet, AM/FM stereo with DVD/MP3 players and rechargeable cargo hold flashlight. The third-row seat runs a stiff $1,220 but includes air/heat vents. A power sunroof costs $795. Dodge marketing director Joe Veltri says Journey is targeted at young families with kids, active young couples without kids and empty-nesters. Those who need room for people and things -- and...

...When used, its automatic cooling and ventilation systems worked wonderfully well. "What do you think?" I asked Mary Anne. "About what?" she asked. "The Journey," I said. She was puzzled, until I told her that I was referring to the Dodge wagon. "Oh," she said. "I could like this one. It's okay. It has lots of stuff." Translation: It's not fancy, but it's pleasant. It gets the job done. It has lots of cubby holes, including an optional "Flip 'n Stow" compartment underneath the front passenger's seat. You can put purses and briefcases in there. The wagon is a motorized closet. Mary Anne said...

...The middle seat has a 40/60 split-folding feature, and the third seat a 50/50 split. Folding the seats can expand the cargo area, and there is even an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to accommodate long items such as skis (this was standard on our R/T). Cloth seats are standard on the SE model, but optional is Chrysler's new YES Essentials stain- and odor-resistant upholstery. That fabric is standard on the SXT model. Why should I also consider these?

The Journey has many competitors in the crossover segment, including the substantially heavier Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Chevrolet Equinox.

TheCarConnection.com’s favorite vehicles in the class include the new Honda CR-V, which got a controversial new look in its recent restyling; the Toyota RAV4, which now offers a third-row rear seat; and the Saturn Vue, a far more handsome vehicle than it used to be, and one coming in a hybrid version this fall.

Subaru’s Forester is also a worth a look, particularly in its base trim.

2009 Saturn VUE
With its available V-6 engine, the 2009 Saturn Vue is a bit more fun to drive than other compact SUVs; otherwise it’s not a standout.

2009 Subaru Forester
It’s significantly improved this year, but the 2009 Subaru Forester remains a unique all-wheel-drive crossover with less power and fewer features, but better carlike handling, than its competition.

2008 Honda CR-V
The 2008 Honda CR-V doesn't have hip style or performance on tap, but it has the security, utility, and frugality that many sensible moms want.

2008 Toyota RAV4
The 2008 Toyota RAV4 brings a little more space than most compact SUVs without a mid-size price.
