1999 daewoo leganza Professional Edmunds Review

...The most luxurious CDX gets a standard power driver's seat, automatic temperature control, fake wood trim, power moonroof, alloy wheels, ABS and traction control. The Leganza's ride was tuned by British suspension expert Lotus, but it's still soft around turns and body roll is apparent. The multinational flavor of the car is enhanced when you discover that the engine is Australian, the automatic transmission is Japanese and the styling is Italian. Built in Korea, the Leganza is a strange melting pot indeed. The biggest hurdle the Leganza faces is not Daewoo's no-haggle factory outlet sales...

...Daewoo produced the mini LeMans for Pontiac between 1987 and 1993, an ugly little machine that gave GM a high-mileage car when gas prices were skittish. GM was reacting to Ford bringin g the mini Fiesta from Europe and boasting of a car that would run all week on a teaspoon of fuel. As gas prices stabilized, the GM/Daewoo partnership dissolved. Leganza is considerably more sophisticated than LeMans. It's a low-cost alternative to a used car or possibly a low-cost starter car for the grad. One major limitation, however is the number of stores where you can find one. Dwight "Skip" Petrzelka...

...I liked some of the little touches inside, such as the fake wood trim. But then other things started to annoy me, such as the stereo, which is far too complicated to operate without a manual. And the fan for the heater and air conditioner, which is a push button that you have to keep punching higher and higher before it goes back to the lowest setting. That's stupid. Daewoo needs to put in a dial that you can turn, like a radio knob, in either direction. He: One area in which the Leganza excels is the chassis. It has an all-independent suspension, which does a marvelous job of soaking up...

...Power comes from a 2-liter, 128-h.p., dual overhead cam, 4-cylinder engine that's surprisingly energetic, yet delivers 22 m.p.g. city/30 m.p.g. highway, about the same as the Lanos. Like with the 1.6, 105-h.p. 4 in Lanos, you'll experience some groan and growl at initial acceleration, but at cruising speed, cabin noise subsides dramatically, providing you don't have the windows all the way down because there's lots of wind noise. Also, like Lanos, adults fit in the back seat and headroom is abundant, but those rear doors don't open very wide so entry and exit are a chore. Nice touches include...

...This car likely would compete with such vehicles as theFord Escort, Toyota Corolla, Saturn SL sedan and Chevy Cavalier. Nubira's 2.0-liter engine delivers reasonable performance and averag e fueleconomy. The power-assisted brakes and power steering worked well, and the carfelt solid and well-made. The Lanos is a subcompact that offers a bit more refinement than the SuzukiEsteem/Chevy Metro and Hyundai Accent, its major competitors. The back seat in the Lanos is a bit tight, but the front compartment isroomy and well laid out. Performance from the 1.4-liter engine is excellent. All three cars...
