2009 chevrolet suburban Professional Edmunds Review

...With either the 1500 or 2500 model, buyers have a choice of either rear- or four-wheel drive. An automatic locking rear differential is optional on all trims except the LTZ, on which it's standard. Properly equipped, the Suburban 2500 can tow up to 9,600 pounds. Combined fuel economy for the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban ranges from about 14 mpg combined to 16 mpg combined, depending on the model and the engine. Obviously, towing and driving with a heavy load can drop these numbers significantly. Safety: Four-wheel antilock disc brakes are standard on all Suburbans, as are stability control and...

...The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban is a behemoth, but if fuel efficiency isn’t a concern, you really can’t do better.
A well-optioned LT Suburban is both a tremendous compromise on luxury and practicality and a great value for the class.
Look over the options list, and you can have a truck that fits everything you need...

...and it's something that gets lost in long lists of performance specs. Cargo & Towing Speaking of performance specs, when properly equipped the two-wheel-drive Suburban with the 5.3-liter V-8 and 4.10 axle ratio can tow up to 8,100 pounds. That's a lot of weight, but the two-wheel-drive Ford Expedition EL tows 9,000. Make sure you know what you're towing before buying a large SUV; some large boats are too heavy for any SUV — you'll need the added towing capacity of a heavy-duty pickup truck. Cargo volume is where the Suburban really excels. Behind the third row is 45.8 cubic feet of...

...The 5.3-liter V-8 can run on E85 and uses Active Fuel Management to shut down cylinders when they're not needed to improve fuel economy. An available all-aluminum 6.0-liter V-8 has variable-valve timing and Active Fuel Management. Suburban 2500 models are powered by an iron-block version of the 6.0-liter V-8. When properly equipped, the Suburban 1500 can tow up to 8,100 pounds and the 2500 can tow up to 9,600 pounds. All engines are mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission. 310-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8 with 335 pounds-feet of torque Aluminum 366-hp, 6.0-liter V-8 with 376...

Why should I also consider these?

When facing off against the two full-size SUV imports, a properly equipped 2009 Chevrolet Suburban can tow five tons, besting the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada in this important category.

Other options include the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator.

The most serious competitor is the Expedition.

In particular, the Ford Expedition EL (extended length) offers some useful features and trim styles the Chevy Suburban doesn't, and it arguably has an even better ride with just a light passenger load.

2009 Nissan Armada
Competitors to the 2009 Nissan Armada offer roomier interiors and better options, but the Armada should be commended for its handsome looks and powerful V-8 engine.

2008 Ford Expedition
The 2008 Ford Expedition is a big, capable SUV with a truly useful and convenient third row.

2008 Lincoln Navigator
The 2008 Lincoln Navigator has more going for it than bling.

2008 Toyota Sequoia
The 2008 Toyota Sequoia is a capable example of the full-size SUV--in a day where the full-size SUV makes less and less sense.
