...The V6 is rated at an even 300 hp and 273 pound-feet of torque. The V8 on manual transmission-equipped cars makes a honking 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Camaro V8s with the automatic have slightly less power (400 hp, 410 lb-ft) but come with a cylinder-deactivation feature for enhanced fuel economy. In our performance tests of manual-transmission Camaros, we've recorded 0-60-mph sprints of 6.0 seconds with the V6 and 5.0 seconds for the V8. EPA fuel economy estimates are an impressive 17 mpg city and 29 highway for the V6 (18 mpg city with the automatic), and 16 mpg city and 24 highway...

...You can blame the nearly 3,900-pound curb weight. The speed-variable power steering is light and a little watery on center, firming up as you turn in. However, the brakes -- 14-inch Brembos on the front -- certainly git 'er done. Now for some shopkeeping. The Camaro comes in three flavors: LS, LT and the SS. The LS and LT come with what most would consider a proper modern engine: a direct-injection, dual-overhead cam, 3.6-liter V6 with variable valve timing. This engine provides a herd of ponies itself -- 304 at 6,400 rpm -- and can be had with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with...

...At night, the interior shines with its LED ambient lighting package. It's a small detail that warms the interior in cool blue lighting. Chevy has also included a lot of technology, including Bluetooth connectivity, USB connection, 245-watt Boston Acoustics nine-speaker stereo and remote start. The one thing you can't get in a Camaro is a navigation system. And if you were hoping to cram three people in the back, you can't. It seats only two in the second row, and those people need to be small. While there is 42.4 inches of leg room up front, there is just 29.9 inches in the back. I managed to...

2010 Camaro SS — Flash Drive

...In close quarters, it's difficult to open them without dinging adjacent cars or other objects. A large blind spot looms over the driver's left shoulder. Even with those faults, it is easy to have a love affair with this car. –Joe ChulickThe Camaro SS is drop-dead gorgeous, especially in Victory Red. Like any classic muscle car, it has an incredible exhaust note, especially when the revs pass 3000 rpm. But unlike those cars from decades ago, the Camaro is easy and fun to drive on twisty as well as long straight roads. Sliding the rear end out with wheels spinning and engine roaring...

...That handily beats the Challenger R/T (5.5 seconds with the manual or automatic, according to Dodge) and edges out the Mustang GT (around 5 seconds with the manual, per various tests). Sadly, other aspects of the SS fail to impress. The manual transmission — the SS gets a heavier-duty unit to handle the V-8's torque — feels more trucklike than the one in the V-6, with muddier linkages and more force required to shift gears. The automatic drivetrain loses 26 horsepower, but the transmission in this version behaves much the same as it does in the V-6. At least the extra power makes untimely...

...Likewise, if I tried to look out the back window via the rearview mirror all I saw were my kids' heads and a bit of light shining through the small rear window. There was no way to safely make quick lane changes or other speedy maneuvers because I could never be sure my blind spots were clear. In the backseat, there weren't any kid-friendly features. Cupholders and entertainment systems were mysteriously absent from this backseat. There are two cupholders for the front row. There also wasn't a lot of legroom in back. I'm 5 feet 4 inches tall, and my younger son, who was sitting behind the...

...an affordable car with knockout looks and first-class road manners, it wouldn't be in the trouble it's in today. Earlier generation Camaros and their Pontiac Firebird siblings were fast. But they were also heavy, clumsy body-on-frame things that experienced some difficulty taking tight corners. This Camaro, by comparison, was something else altogether. It was tight, relatively light and gifted with the ability to make a tight U-turn on a narrow street without touching a curb left or right. Long trips in earlier Camaros left me worn out. But after driving several hours in the wrong direction...

...Both conspire to make the cabin feel just a tad claustrophobic, particularly when backing out of parking places or driveways. A rear-view camera would be a great option. Speaking of options, there is no navigation system available, probably because it would bump up the cost. The Camaro's cabin is snug but comfortable. The front seats provide excellent support for long trips or aggressive driving. The instrument panel has square surrounds for the tachometer and speedometer, reflecting the design of the original. Four small gauges are located at the front of the center console. Having the door...

SS trims get four-piston upgraded Brembo brake calipers, a more aggressive tuneable suspension, and more.A V6 and a V8 in two configurations power the upcoming Camaro, depending on transmission chosen. The V6 is a 3.6-liter engine, whose basic design has been employed in other GM models such as the Cadillac CTS, and produces 300 hp with either the six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The V8 is a 6.2-liter and gets a bit of a power boost when equipped with...

It features GM's Active Fuel Management system, which turns off four cylinders under light driving conditions. The Camaro offers two suspension settings: LS and LT models receive a sport-tuned suspension, called FE2, while SS Camaros get a performance-tuned suspension, called FE3. SS models also get large Brembo brakes and...

Why should I also consider these?

Competitors for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro fall in to several categories dictated by which Camaro you're considering.

The most obvious competitors are the Camaro's traditional nemeses: the 2010 Ford Mustang and 2009 Dodge Challenger.

We prefer the base Camaro to the base V-6 Mustang or Challenger because the Chevy's engine/transmissions are flat-out better.

However, the newest Mustang GT is plenty refined and stands out as a great value with a V-8.

The Mustang Shelby GT500 manages to eclipse even the Camaro SS's formidable punch, with 540 horses.

The Challenger R/T and SRT8 provide two different levels of V-8 power packaged around a larger five-passenger interior.

If you're looking at other coupes with V-6 engines and automatic transmissions, the Toyota Solara could be your car if you prefer a duller drive with less iconic style.

Sporty coupes like the 2009 Nissan 370Z and 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe might be up your alley if you're considering a Camaro with a V-6 and a six-speed manual.

The Camaro is unabashedly American in its styling, but the refinement of its powertrain and suspension are easily the match for these imports.

2010 Ford Mustang
Nostalgia is still a big part of the appeal, but the 2010 Ford Mustang is now every bit a modern, refined sport coupe.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
For $22,000, the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0t represents a heck of a performance value.

2009 Dodge Challenger
Let the burnouts begin! The Ford Mustang finally has another domestic competitor.

2009 Nissan 370Z
The Nissan Z has never occupied the top spot in the performance world—and it doesn't now—but it's still a great performance car that starts just under $30,000.
