The available lane-departure warning system alerts the driver via vibrations in the steering wheel if the car starts to veer out of its lane, and a night vision system warns of possible hazards out of regular headlight range. Both hill start assist and hill descent control are standard on AWD models. In government crash tests, the 2009 BMW 5 Series earned only three out of five stars for driver protection in a... |

Other goodies include a cell-phone cradle and iPod/USB adapter ($400) under the center armrest and cupholders that slip out of the dash at the push of a button (only one did). Oh, and when the car is locked from the outside, buttons to unlock it are disabled inside, so a thief who manages to get in can't use the door to get out. The wagon starts at $55,800 with power sunroof, AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player audio system, rain-sensing wipers, Bluetooth phone technology, anti-lock brakes... |

2009 BMW 535 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Features The 535i xDrive starts at $55,800 and comes with a fair amount of standard features, like a panoramic moonroof , xenon headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers. As with most BMWs, though, it's very easy to load it up with option packages and extravagant features. Our tester was loaded with so many it stickered at almost $74,000. Leather seats aren't standard, leatherette is, but BMW adds leather in its Value Package, which comes at no extra cost and also includes an iPod and USB adapter, a heated steering wheel and heated seats. The chief competitor to the 2009 BMW 5-Series's sedan is the Mercedes E-Class, and the Audi A6 Avant is the Sports Wagon's closest rival.
The E-Class has more of an emphasis on comfort than the 5, with a roomier-feeling interior and a softer ride.
The Avant only comes with the 255-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6 engine, not the larger, 350-horsepower V-8 available on the sedan.
As with the Sports Wagon, all-wheel drive is standard, though the Avant has a slightly softer ride, and its handling isn't as sharp as that of the 5-Series, nor does it offer such advanced technology features.
The Cadillac STS brings plenty of high-tech options and respectable performance, but it doesn't have the prestige of the 5-Series.
The Saab 9-5 SportCombi is now a quite dated design.
It comes with front-wheel drive and turbocharged four-cylinder power, and its powertrains aren't as refined as those of the other rivals, but it's packaged well, with excellent seats, plenty of headroom, and more useful cargo space.
There's also the Infiniti M35 and M45, which bring brisk performance and some rival high-tech features such as a lane-departure system, but their cabins aren't as quiet and refined as those of the 5-Series models.
