Flash Drive: 2009 BMW 335dSource: MSN Autos...The new navigation system is a lot easier to use than the previous version. In the rear, there is plenty of room for two adults. If you are going to the warehouse store or on a trip, the 335d's trunk is spacious enough for both journeys. Prepare to forget about everything you usually associate with diesels, because the new BMW 335d is quiet, clean and exciting to drive. Factor in that the vehicle is also miserly at the pump and that diesel fuel is currently affordable now, and I think you've got yourself a winner. – Joe ChulickThe 2009 BMW 335d is the perfect example of what a sports sedan... |

2009 BMW 335 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...But it wasn't easy. To pass California's strict NOx emission standards, the 3 Series -- like other high-performance German oil burners -- uses a urea-injection exhaust treatment system. The 20-liter reservoir (note the circular access panel on the left-rear quarter panel) should be sufficient to last the car between 11,000-mile service intervals, if you aren't cavorting sehr schnell. And you probably won't. This is a car, an engine, for fully grown adults whose idea of motoring pleasure is getting nearly 40 mpg in a fine sport sedan at 80 mph. Yes, it will go fast, but the real exaltation is... |

2009 BMW 335 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The firm suspension is compliant enough to be comfortable, yet the car feels composed and confident in almost any driving situation. BMWs always have great brakes, and the 335d is no exception. Anti-lock, traction control and vehicle stability control are all standard. The 335d's cabin is a bit on the snug side, and adults are likely to find the back-seat legroom is none too generous. The trunk has plenty of space, and the optional fold-down rear seat is a real benefit. BMW's iDrive uses a knob on the center console to control many of the vehicle's functions and settings. In the past, the... |

2009 BMW 328 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Driving those cars was the motorized equivalent of being a character in Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man." People noticed you only if you got in their way. Those cars were very un-Ike-like. Rev. Ike said preachers can't preach unless they first get attention. In that regard, he was short on miracles but long on cars. Everybody looked whenever Rev. Ike rolled up in one of his fancy rides. A lot of those people stayed around to listen, too. Likewise was my experience in the BMW 328i convertible. When I told people I got good mileage in a Toyota Yaris, they all yawned. But when I told them I got... |

2009 BMW 335 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The layout remains simple, in a good way. The positives in our coupe included the belt-feeder, a motorized arm that grabs the shoulder belt from the B- pillar and moves it within reach after you get in and close the door. (In a two-door, the shoulder belt either blocks passage to the backseat or slides far enough back that it's hard to reach — a task that gets more onerous as we age. The belt-feeder seems a nice feature to grow old with.) Less impressive engineering includes the preposterous retracting cupholders — both on the passenger side. Flimsy doesn't quite describe these paragons... |

2009 BMW 335 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...Stability control with traction control is standard, and along with low-profile, 18-inch, all-season radials, ensures excellent road manners. Room is ample upfront, and front seat cushions help reduce ride firmness, but the rear seat backs/bottoms feel as if chiseled from marble. Trunk space is massive and, with the $1,150 cold-weather package, those seat backs fold to carry the skis inside. But the fold lever is in the trunk, not the cabin. The 335d comes standard with power glass moonroof, climate control, rain-sensing wipers, AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 system, heated power mirrors and power... |

2009 BMW 335 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...automatic climate control Optional front and rear parking assist monitors Optional navigation system with iDrive Optional Dynamic Cruise Control can gently apply the brakes to maintain a preset speed Optional Sirius Satellite Radio Under the Hood With the addition of a diesel engine for 2009, the 335 now has two engine options, both of which are twin-turbocharged and displace 3.0 liters. Diesel engines are known for their fuel efficiency, and BMW puts preliminary mileage estimates at 23/33 mpg city/highway, although official EPA estimates were not available at the time of publication. 2009 BMW 335 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...but otherwise you'll find BMW's characteristic use of good materials; my test car had real aluminum trim on the dash, doors and center console. Fit and finish are also befitting a car that comes with a luxury price tag. The 3 Series isn't a big car, and its interior feels smaller than competitors like the Infiniti G37 sedan. I'm 6-foot-1 and could feel the cabin's close confines around me, but I was able to get settled. The backseat, likewise, is on the small side. The biggest improvement by far in the 3 Series' cabin is the new iDrive multifunction control system, which is included with the... |

2009 BMW 335 Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The additional lines make it a little meaner looking -- and the new diesel engine responds appropriately to the more sinister face. Nothing can be truly mean if it doesn't have the power to back it up. Astonishing performance Then there are the mileage numbers. Having a car that runs farther is synonymous with better nowadays. The 335d manages 32 miles per gallon on the highway and 22 mpg in the city. Its gas counterpart hits 26 mpg on the highway. The 32-mpg highway driving might sound OK for many cars, but the performance this car provides makes it downright astonishing. You buy this car... |

Infiniti's G eschews BMW's confident restraint for daring angles, a raucous exhaust, and an extremely outgoing nature—too bad its NVH levels can't keep up with its attractive interior and spunky driving fun.
Audi's new-for-'09 A4 sedan, sharing underpinnings with the A5 coupe, is an admittedly sexy beast with both two and four doors; packaging is more capacious than the BMW, but powertrains fall a tad short next to BMW's gold standard.
Mercedes' C- and CLK- sedan and coupe, respectively, tend toward the more cosseting end of the small luxury equation, but as such offer serene rides and beautiful interiors.
The Saab 9-3 hangs just slightly below this company in price, but its performance and luxury factors are a decided step down from all of the above.
