1998 Audi Cabriolet Professional Cars.com ReviewSource: Cars.com...The contoured leather seats did a good job of providing support for long stints behind the wheel, but more support for the upper back and shoulder region would be welcome. I missed the lack of a tilt steering wheel. Handling was crisp, especially on mountain curves. Four-wheel disc brakes, with anti-lock standard, scrubbed off speed quickly. The lack of a top means that bumps send shudders through the dash and steering wheel, which is fairly common among convertibles today. The instruments were large and clearly marked. Is raising and lowering the top a one-hand or six-man operation? The bad news first. On cobbles and cracked surfaces, the Audi does indeed develop cowl and windshield shake with a noticeable amount of steering column movement. The good news is that it isn't enough to throw you through the nearest storefront. But it is there. With the top up, sound and weather conditions inside the car are almost those of a sedan. In its place were two small cup holders. The front seats were comfortable and very firm, lending good support for long drives. The back seats were fine, even if rear legroom was sacrificed for the convertible top. The trunk was sacrificed too, but space is sufficient if you pack light. Safety is pretty good. It's no surprise that Audi sells few copies of the Cabriolet in the United States, considering that the BMW 3-Series and Saab 900 convertibles are priced in the Cabriolet's range and are more viscerally satisfying automobiles. Buyers looking for both luxury and speed can get a loaded Mustang GT convertible and save a few grand, or pop for a similarly-priced Cobra variant. Twist a lever in t he center of the windshield area and it pops up. Press a button and the top automatically folds into its storage compartment, just like a $100,000 Mercedes-Benz. One bothersome aspect of raising and lowering the top is the rigmarole you have to go through. The car has to be in park or neutral with the key in the on position.
