2010 audi a5 Professional Edmunds Review

...If an imminent collision is detected, the system alerts the driver and primes the brakes for full stopping power. In brake testing, an A5 3.2 Quattro with the Sport package came to a stop from 60 mph in an excellent 108 feet. That distance would grow longer without that package's summer tires. Interior Design and Special Features: The A5's attractive and high-quality cabin is one of its strong points, though the competition has largely caught up to Audi's formerly segment-leading interiors. Audi's MMI routes many functions through a control knob mounted on either the dashboard or the center...

In normal conditions, the all-wheel drive channels 60 percent of power to the rear wheels. With the manual transmission, Audi says the A5 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 6 seconds. 211-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 258 pounds-feet of torque 265-hp, 3.2-liter V-6 with 243 pounds-feet...

2010 Audi A5 Overview

...Power-adjustable front seats, a tilting Panorama sunroof, interior ambient lighting, cruise control, and automatic climate control also come standard on the A5. A 50/50-split folding rear seat adds flexibility to the A5's interior, while a standard storage system in the trunk includes side pockets, floor tie-downs, and bag hangers. A 10-speaker, 180-watt AM/FM audio system with a CD player, subwoofer, and Sirius satellite radio are among the A5's other standard features. For the 2.0T trims, an optional Premium Plus package adds heated front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, and...

...especially around the doors, but overall I was focused on the stylish gauges, the sophisticated entertainment and navigation system, and the road, as a driver should be. Those features also make up for the two small rear seats, which are nearly impossible to use. One drawback, though, is getting in and out. The A5 is a step better than the Chevy Corvette in terms of having to fold your body to get in and out of it, but that's not much of a compliment. More extreme sports cars are easier to jump into than the A5, which might make this otherwise mainstream vehicle attractive to fewer buyers. My...

...The S5 version, which has a 3-liter, 333-hp supercharged V-6, is the choice for go-like-a-bat bursts. The A5 stands out in its ability to keep a tight grip on the road while darting in and out of corners and turns. Thanks to the performance suspension and stability control, as well as optional 19-inch performance radials (summer treads that would have to go in the snow), you enjoy sure-footed handling. And, there's the quattro that allows the A5 to run as if locked into a slot on the road. The test car came with optional ($2,950) adaptive suspension that adjusts to the road surface, along...

...nor do they intrude on trunk and cabin space like a retractable hardtop does. They operate faster. They don't weigh as much, which helps gas mileage and performance. I buy some of those reasons, but not all of them. Cargo volume, at 10.2 cubic feet, is down 1.8 cubic feet versus the A5 coupe's trunk. You'll lose a bit more of that with the convertible top lowered. Audi doesn't report cargo volume with the top down, but the decrease in our test car looked to be about 20 percent or 30 percent. That's far less intrusion than the folding tops in the BMW 3 Series, G37 and Lexus IS convertibles...

Why should I also consider these?

The 2010 Audi A5/Cabriolet has a very understated appearance, as do its direct rivals from BMW.

The BMW 3-Series continues to set the standard for handling, though the folding-hardtop convertible has gotten quite heavy, with duller responses.

Its interior is more conservative than the Audi two-doors' cockpits, too.

The Infiniti G37 has a firm ride and sharp steering, but it's not quite as comfortable as either the Audi or the BMW coupe, and it's a little noisier.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and the forthcoming 2011 E-Class Cabriolet have a new hard-edged style that's not universally appealing, but its dynamics are a step up from the former CLK-Class coupe and convertible.
