2010 Acura ZDX — Flash Drive
Source: MSN Autos

...Cargo space in the ZDX is pretty good when the seats are folded back. On the road, I achieved 18 mpg in mixed driving, which is acceptable given the high output of the engine. At almost $56,000, a fully loaded ZDX is the highest priced Acura today. At that price I would rather purchase its cousin, the Honda Crosstour, and pocket the difference. –Joe ChulickI'm afraid I don't understand the point of the Acura ZDX. The company already has the compact RDX and larger MDX — is there really a need for another SUV in the lineup? Yes, the ZDX is quite nice inside, especially with the available...

...solar-sensing, dual-zone automatic climate control system; and keyless entry with pushbutton start. The top model comes with the Advance Package, and lists for $56,045. Included is everything in the Technology Package, plus a blind-spot information system, radar cruise control, collision-mitigating braking system, Acura's Integrated Dynamics System, heated and ventilated front seats with perforated Milano premium leather, premium brushed-tricot headliner, and a sport steering wheel. Although not included on our test vehicle, the Integrated Dynamics System allows the driver to switch the...

2010 Acura ZDX Overview
Source: CarGurus

...Its alloy 3.7-liter V6 produces 300 hp and features VTEC variable valve timing. The only transmission offered is an all-new six-speed automatic with manual-shift capability. Also standard is Acura's highly sophisticated super-handling all-wheel-drive (SH-AWD) system, which varies power distribution both front to back and side to side, making "passionate getaways" possible in any weather. The ZDX's equipment list is extensive, and nearly every modern convenience is either standard or available as part of an option package. All ZDXs get leather memory seats, a 6-CD stereo with Bluetooth, a...

...The AWD system goes to work when slippage is detected. A schematic in the dash shows what wheels are in play when. Handling is more car than SUV-like. A dial in the dash lets you switch into a firmer sports mode for better reaction to wheel input in corners and turns, but at a cost of jiggling over uneven patches in the road. A 3.7-liter, 300-hp V-6, same as in the MDX, provides adequate power, especially considering Honda feels it will be carrying only couples on passionate getaways rather than a cabin of kids. Mileage rating is 16 city/23 highway, so couples can go where and when they want...

...Unfortunately, this is more reactive than proactive. It compels you to charge into turns heavy on the gas — which it typically handles impressively, but probably isn't the safest way to drive. Vehicles whose weight distribution is more balanced than the ZDX's 57.7/42.3 percent (front/rear) — and/or that send more torque to the rear wheels at any speed — tend to transition more seamlessly into and out of high-speed curves. To be clear, this stuff happens only when you drive really aggressively. You don't notice a thing during normal driving. Some vehicles feel smaller or lighter on the...

...tractable 3.7-liter, 300-horsepower V-6, married to a new six-speed automatic transmission, and the so-called super-handling all-wheel drive. Ordinarily, 300 hp, six gear ratios and AWD would add up to significant off-the-line thrust and punchy passing power. Here, not so much, thanks to the Acura's galling curb weight of over 4,425 pounds. Who knew pretty weighed so much? This tonnage can make the ZDX's performance feel downright dreary. Acura says the car's 0-60 mph acceleration is less than 7 seconds. That seems to be wishful thinking, based on my test drive. Also, at Los Angeles freeway...

...The engine is a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter unit that provides excellent power across the entire rev range. It accelerates smoothly while noise and vibration are held in check. The six-speed automatic transmission can be shifted manually with paddles on the steering wheel. Even though this crossover coupe has all-wheel drive and good ground clearance, it doesn't drive like an SUV. It feels tight and solid on twisty two-lane roads. Choppy pavement reveals that the ride is quite firm, but it is not objectionable. The size of the cargo compartment is hindered somewhat by the steeply sloping roof...

...Keyless entry and start are also included in the package, along with a premium stereo. The Advance Package adds ventilated front seats, premium tricot ceiling liner material, a sport steering wheel and LED ambient lighting. Under the Hood The ZDX is powered by a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine, which requires premium gas. All ZDX models have a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The transmission includes Drive and Sport modes, and it also offers sequential manual shifting via paddles on the steering wheel. The optional Advance Package adds adaptive cruise control and an...

...Plush and exquisite While the vehicle's performance was good, its interior is absolutely fabulous. If this ZDX is a sign of Acura's future interior, look out Audi, there's some competition on the way. Acura managed to provide the mirror image of the exterior on the inside. But all of the sharp edges are covered nicely in supple leather. And while there are a lot of busy lines throughout the cabin, it remains calm and sedate. The center console, which on other Acuras becomes an alphabet soup of buttons and knobs, is nicely organized. The black-face stereo only lights up the buttons if the...

Why should I also consider these?

With its upscale price and features and its unusual blend of coupe and SUV, the 2010 Acura ZDX has few peers in the car world.

It's closest to the new BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo and BMW X6 in mission; the X6 has a higher pricetag and slightly more usable room than the ZDX, while the Gran Turismo has a very spacious backseat, a tall roofline, and a flexible cargo area that puts function first.

The Infiniti FX sport-ute possesses a jazzy style all its own, with tight rear seats and not much cargo space.

Best of all is the new Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, a five-door hatchback with longer rear doors than the CTS sedan; it has good cargo space, very good rear-seat room and access, and a compelling shape that's distinct from its four-door cousin, along with an option for all-wheel drive.

2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo
The 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo hatch-wagon may puzzle some shoppers, but it knows how to entertain on the road and doesn't mind if you bring company.

2009 Cadillac CTS
The 2009 Cadillac CTS continues to compete with the best from Mercedes and BMW with a distinctly American approach, boasting some of the top tech features in its class.

2009 Infiniti FX
The 2009 Infiniti FX offers a truly distinctive shape and sportscarlike acceleration. If you need to haul plywood or lots of kids, though, look elsewhere.
