One part sleek cruiser, one part berserk V-8 power, the 2010 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Convertible is the very definition of a muscle car.

The 2010 updates to the Ford Mustang are put to good use in the Shelby GT500 Convertible, with the aggressive front-end treatment, racing stripes and Cobra logos making the most of the car’s brawny-yet-trim new shape. Unlike the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS or 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8, the Shelby GT500 doesn’t look like it’s a 130% scale model of a real car.

Inside, the cockpit is comfortable, classically Mustang, and overall looks and feels of quality. The materials used are all tolerable even in light of the car’s $53,700 sticker price. Considering this is a convertible, you have to expect the inside to get some exposure to the elements, and everything in the Shelby’s cabin feels like it’s made to last.

Performance is a two-edged sword for the 2010 GT500 Convertible--the 540-horsepower, 510-pound-foot, 5.4-liter supercharged four-valve iron-block V-8 engine is happy whether it’s burbling along at 1,200 rpm or catapulting you toward the horizon at 6,000 rpm, but that absolutely brilliant powerplant is about all that’s going on here.

Scuttle shake is a kind way of terming the chassis flex and vibration you’ll find behind the wheel of the Convertible, with the mirror and windshield frame often shaking so hard over bumpy or gravel roads it seems as if they’re about to take flight.

  1. Why would Ford choose not to put the new suspension on the convertible? Do they really think that someone wanting a convertible would not want the same level of performance that a coupe would offer? Would BMW or Mercedes do the same?
