TomTom GO 910 review

TomTom had a very difficult task in designing a portable GPS that could improve on the outgoing GO 700 model. Portable GPS devices are at the point where they’re no longer simply a tool for navigation. Instead, they now offer an all-in-one solution for navigation, entertainment and even as a mobile phone handsfree kit. The GO 910 for the first time comes pre-loaded with maps of the United States, Canada, and Europe and features the new text-to-speech technology, a system that reads out street names in real-time. This review was written by one of our contributors from Sydney, Australia and features the Australian maps only.

Physical Aspects

The GO 910 follows TomTom’s tradition of a free form device with a clear, bright screen and a lack of physical buttons. The unit itself is actually quite small despite housing a 20 GB hard-drive. This might sound big, but almost 12GB are taken up by the mapping data and the new text-to-speech software, leaving only 8GB to store all your files. At four inches across, the GO 910’s touch sensitive display is actually smaller than many rivals due to it being a widescreen, which lead to it feeling slightly cramped. Also, though the screen is a rather bright unit, it did not distract our attention whilst driving at night like many competitors. Viewing the screen from most angles was not a problem, however bright sunlight can blank out the image.
