Renault updates Clio with 138HP 2.0L engine

Renault has given its small Clio hatch an engine upgrade in the form of a 138hp 2.0L motor that goes on sale in UK models. Launched initially with a six-speed manual and three-door configuration only, the new hatch will be followed by the five-door Privilège and Initiale auto versions in early 2007. Combined with 194Nm of torque, the new motor enables the Clio to go from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds all the way to a top speed of 127mph.

A sporty GT version is expected in the new future, complete with performance suspension and new aero parts. Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, hands free keycard, leather steering wheel, tinted windows and unique 16in wheels. Positioned below the 197hp Clio Sport, the new GT will go up against cars like the Ford Fiesta ST and Peugeot 207 GT Turbo 1.6, which range from 140 to 150hp.
