Preview: 2009 Ford Ka

Ford original planned to release the next-generation model of its Ka minicar one year after the launch of the Fiat 500, with which it shares the same platform, meaning we should see the next-generation model by the middle of the year. Though both cars are based on the same platform, much of the engineering work had already been completed for the 500 before Ford came into the picture, and ended up causing the delay of its launch.

As previewed in this latest rendering, the new Ka keeps the curvy shape of the current model but gets new, more angular features from Ford’s recent Verve Concept. A new front bumper with integrated fog lights and a pronounced grille give the car an aggressive stance, as do the wheel at each corner design and the short overhangs.

Production for the Ka is scheduled to start at the Tychy plant in Poland around the middle of the year alongside Fiat’s new 500. Both share the platform used in Fiat’s five-door Panda, but the tiny Ford gets its own unique engines including a high-performance 1.4L unit with a possible 150hp output reserved for a sports version. The Ka will also have its own unique interior and is expected to be priced slightly lower than its Fiat cousin.

Forget it! The only Ford americans seem to buy is the F150 ;) Look at the rankings of most sold cars of 2007. There are so many trucks in it, it is no surprise nothing new is released in the states. Look at the news form Chicago motorshow. What was the most amazing thing presented and seen all over us car blogs: pickups, suv and so on.

agree with CK. The US mentality is to have a big brash and terrible pick up, suv you name it. The smaller cars dont stand a chance...which is stupid..they are more fuel efficient easier to park and are just as comfortable. But look at the lastest and greatest to come out of the showrooms...opoohh a new SUV, or the new F150. Its a big concrete block with wheels.

ok guys, I'm sorry but we will be getting the mazda2 and the ford fiesta,.. which if any of you remember, is the concept that this picture has been made from. the fiesta platform has also (historically) spawned the ford Ka. its just a shortened version.

ford has already said they will be selling the fiesta here. its not much more to add Ka production.

what the real question is, is when this goes to production, will it ACTUALLY look like this?

I've seen the fiesta concept in person and it is simply stunning. Its amazing. but will they make it look like that? no. it will be inspired by the prototypes, but it wont look that hot. it will look like it but some how look much more boring. just wait and see.2
