Porsche introduces 2009 facelifted 911 Targa range

Following the release of the updated 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 models comes new details of the 2009 Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S models. The distinctive feature of the 911 Targa, as before, is the 1.54-square-metre sliding glass roof and tailgate. When opened completely, the roof slides within seven seconds beneath the tailgate, offering an open space above the passenger compartment of 0.45 square meters. The sliding roof comes as standard with a new sunblind and anti-sunglare glass for protection from UV radiation and excessive heat.

Highlighting the 2009 model year facelift is the introduction of a seven-speed Porsche Doppel Kupplung (PDK) dual-clutch gearbox as well as direct injection technology, which boosts performance and saves fuel. Output of the 3.6L engine in the Targa 4 is up by 20hp (15kW) to 345hp (254kW), and when equipped with the PDK fuel consumption equates to 23.3mpg (10.1L/100km). Top speed is rated at 176mph (284km/h).

The improvements on the 911 Targa 4S with its 3.8L power unit are equally significant, with maximum output up by 30hp (22kW) to 385hp (283kW) and overall fuel consumption down in the case of Carrera 4S Cabriolet with PDK to 22mpg (10.7L/100 km). Top speed is rated at 184mph (297km/h) and the sprint to 62mph (100km/h) takes just 4.7 seconds when equipped with the PDK (4.9 seconds for manual).

In the new generation of the Targa 4 and Targa 4S, the electronically controlled PTM Porsche Traction Management replaces the former viscous multiple-plate clutch AWD. Styling changes consist of new lights with LED treatments, including daytime running lights, as well as slightly revised bumpers.   I love the car, but I say that Targa is more leisure than sport. However I would like to drive one sportive, even it’s leisure. :)

  Sorin, of course the Targa is about leisure over sport, it is supposed to be like a convertible without the drawbacks.

  do people even buy the Targa? Surely those who wants a convertible buy a Cabriolet and those that don't buy the coup this just seems silly

  Dandan, I think the Targa would be best for people that like the feeling of wind in their hair but want to keep the ridgidity of the coupe ;)

  I have a 2004 4s convertible, with hardtop + snows, and drive in winter in Toronto. I am considering ungrading in 2010 (if I can afford it!) and might consider a Targa. Would I lose the joy of a convertible in summer? but gain the advantage of an all round year? your thought would be appreciated!
