It could be the finest luxury sedan in the world—if our drives in the new S-Class are any clue.

Yes, the Maybach nameplate is back, and this time, it’s the badge applied to what is now the ultimate S-Class. Like Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach is now a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz. Maybach will specialize in ultra-luxury cars, and this first model doesn’t disappoint.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is it’s long. It’s the S-Class stretched by 8.1 inches to be exact, and that addition goes entirely to the rear cabin. There’s a restyled roof pillar, unique wheels, and Maybach badges here and there. From the front, though, it looks much like the current S-Class.

It’s the interior that really gets taken to the next level. Those who sit in the backseat will be treated to more than enough legroom to stretch out in some fantastic executive seats that both recline and massage. Personalization is a big part of the reborn Maybach, and there are may options ranging from trim which features wood and chrome, leather at shoulder height in the door panels, chrome-plated tweeter grilles, and fiber-optic cables for the ambient lighting. Of course, there’s a top-of-the-range Burmester 3D sound system.

Powering the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 rated at 523 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque. Owners can expect 0-60 mph times of just 5 seconds, and a top speed of 155 mph. In the future, V-6 and V-8 options will become available.

Sales of the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 are scheduled for April of 2015 with more details to be released closer to its on-sale date. Be sure to read our full preview of the 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class here.
