Following the reveal of its all-new XC90 in late August, Volvo has now followed up with the luxury SUV’s sporty R-Design trim. Volvo’s R-Design trim doesn’t see any increase in power—for that there’s Polestar—but it does lend the Swedish vehicles a sporty presence—both inside and out.

For the latest XC90, the R-Design trim adds a number of distinguishing details, such as a silk metal finish for the grille, lower front spoiler and window surround, plus sporty exhaust tips, integrated roof rails, and side mirror caps in matte silver. There are also two R-Design wheel patterns on offer, measuring 20 and 22 inches across respectively.

Inside, sports seats with Nubuck and Nappa leather are joined by a perforated leather steering wheel. These are accompanied by more R-Design details, such as the gearshift knob, pedals, floor mats and illuminated tread plates. The driver also gets an exclusive R-Design leather key remote control.

Finally, the new XC90’s tablet-like touchscreen display in the center console and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster get a few tweaks for the R-Design upgrade. Both feature a unique R-Design theme.

The new XC90 goes on sale in the U.S. next spring, with only two variants set to be offered initially: the T6 and T8. The T6 features a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 316 horsepower. The T8 also features a 2.0-liter mill but with plug-in hybrid tech to boost output to a V-8-like 400 hp. The R-Design trim will be available on both.

Note, R-Design is just one of three trim styles being offered by Volvo for its future lineup. While R-Design adds a sporty touch, the new Momentum trim is aimed at those after value and the Inscription trim is aimed at those seeking luxury.
