Take one 1969 Cadillac DeVille, two crazy Canadians living in Los Angeles, a hot tub, and the need for speed, mix thoroughly, and you get this: the Carpool DeVille, on Kickstarter to raise funds for a run at Bonneville. They only need $10,000. You can help.

The story of the Carpool DeVille and owners/builders Phillip Weicker and Duncan Forster is a long and twisted one. In fact, this isn’t even the duo’s first Carpool. The Carpool Mk I, emblazoned with the livery of the Canadian flag, was built from a 1982 Chevy Malibu back in 1996. That car was invited to compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats with the intent of setting a world record for hot tub speed.

But the plan never quite came together.

Fast forward a few years to 2008. The crew had relocated to Los Angeles, none of them had matured into sober adults, and the Carpool DeVille was envisioned and born.

Now, six years later, they’re reliving their glory and getting serious about going to Bonneville. So they’ve started a Kickstarter project to fund the dream of an SCTA-sanctioned world speed record attempt. And it’s already raised $2,222.

If you’re worried about their safety, you should be, but they’ve built an SCTA-grade roll cage with racing seat that will plonk inside the hot tub’s confines for the record attempt if they manage to raise the necessary funds.

Of course, there’s every chance that things might not work out, and Forster and Weicker acknowledge this. The car may break, the car may be denied entry by the SCTA (though they discount this possibility given the SCTA’s existing off-beat record holders), they may be disqualified for a technical or safety reason, or they may simply be unable to drive the Carpool DeVille fast enough to set the record. But none of that dissuades these guys.

This excerpt from the Kickstarter FAQ section sums up why:

Why did you do this??

Because we can!

No, really, why?

We choose not to do the things we do because they are easy, but because they are hard. And because they are fun. Overcoming obstacles and having fun are two of life's nobler pursuits. It's easy to forget about the second one.

Seriously, isn't there some type of medication you could take that would make you think more clearly?

We tried it, but it left a funny taste in Duncan's mouth and made Phil's hair fall out in clumps. Rather than risk pharmaceutical uncertainty, we chose to forge ahead with our plans to race the Carpool DeVille.
