Lincoln’s current MKX has been on sale since the 2007 model year and has only been updated once during all these years. Lincoln is well aware that its mid-size crossover is in need of renewal, and we’re getting our first look at the next-generation version in the form of a concept at this week’s 2014 Beijing Auto Show.

Lincoln has just entered the Chinese market, and an exciting concept reveal during the nation’s premier auto show is a great way of putting itself on the map. Lincoln is launching in China with just two models, the MKZ and MKC, but plans to have a five-model lineup by 2016. Other models in the pipeline include new versions of the MKX and MKS as well as the recently updated Navigator.

Lincoln hasn’t mentioned when exactly we’ll see the next MKX in showrooms, but the wait shouldn’t be long. That’s because the next MKX will be largely identical under the skin with the 2015 Ford Edge due out later this year--itself previewed in concept form last year. An auto show debut of the production version is likely to take place within the next 12 months.

On the outside, it will be hard to guess that the next MKX is based on the 2015 Edge. Its design is an evolution of the gorgeous styling of the 2015 MKC compact crossover and consists of well-balanced proportions highlighted by wide shoulders, a sloping roofline and 21-inch wheels. The vehicle also features LED headlights and a new take on the Lincoln split-wing grille--the lights now appear to float within the slats of the grille.

Lincoln also points out that some Chinese customer influences have helped shape the design. For example, elements such as the separated front skid plate, heightened ground clearance and reinforced wheel arches were all added based on the results from various studies Lincoln has conducted in the Chinese market over the past few years.

No details on the interior have been given, but expect to see premium materials such as wood, leather and brushed metal all finished in warm and natural colors. Lincoln says the roof over the rear was lowered to give the vehicle a sleeker shape, though we hope this doesn’t cramp headroom in the rear. A panoramic glass surface also lets natural light fill the cabin.

Lincoln makes its formal debut in China at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show starting today. It has a handful of production models on display as well as the new MKX concept. For more from the show, head to our dedicated hub.
