The LaFerrari supercar that debuted this week at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show is the first Ferrari road car to be styled exclusively by the automaker’s own designers.

This ends the tradition of Pininfarina designing Ferrari’s models, which dates back to 1951.

Only a handful of Ferrari’s road cars weren’t designed by Pininfarina. One was the Dino 308 GT4 that was penned by rival Italian design firm Bertone in 1973.

Speaking with Automotive News (subscription required), Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo confirmed that the LaFerrari was styled exclusively by Ferrari but said the automaker has no plans to end its ties with Pininfarina.

“There is nothing from Pininfarina in this car, but we are working with them on two other models, which I hope will come to market soon,” he said.

One of the two new models he is referring to is believed to be the replacement for the California, test mules for which have already been spotted on public roads.

Responsible for the look of the LaFerrari was Italian designer Flavio Manzoni, who left a high-level post at the Volkswagen Group to join Ferrari three years ago. He has previously worked for fellow Italian brands Lancia and Fiat.

With Ferrari boldly claiming that the LaFerrari encompasses the very best of Prancing Horse passion, technology and exclusivity, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that its lines would be penned exclusively by Ferrari.

After all, the automaker only lent its name to the car because it was deemed the maximum expression of what defines Ferrari--excellence in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving--and that clearly wouldn't be the case if the car was designed by an outside firm.
