Whether you’re a fan of the new crossover coupes that have been trickling onto the market since the introduction of the BMW X6 back in 2008, you had better get used to seeing them on the roads as a handful of automakers are working on new versions of their own.

In the case of BMW, it’s now planning its second example, previewed by the Concept X4 that’s set to debut at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show next week.

As the name suggests, the X4 will fit into the BMW lineup between the X3 and X5 SUVs but will feature the distinct tall-riding coupe look first introduced on the X6.

In this latest video, BMW’s head of exterior design, Domagoj Dukec, talks about the look of the new Concept X4.

He explains that the Concept X4, like all BMWs, exhibits elegance and dynamism, but since it’s also an X vehicle it has to exhibit strength as well.

The production version of the X4 is due out next year. It will be based on the same underpinnings as the X3 and be manufactured at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
