BMW is working on updated versions of several of its key models, including its 5-Series sedan and X3 crossover. Another updated BMW we should be seeing in the near future is the 5-Series Gran Turismo, which first came on the scene in late 2009 as a 2010 model.

We’ve just got our hands on spy shots of a prototype for the updated 5-Series GT, which is expected to hit the market in the second half of next year as a 2014 model. The masked sections on the prototype suggest we’ll be seeing new bumpers and some revisions to the lights.

Despite sharing a platform with the 7-Series, along with a number of the range-topping sedan’s premium features, sales of the 5-Series GT have proven lackluster and it’s unclear if a modest facelift will help alleviate the issue. BMW groups sales of the 5-Series GT together with the 5-Series sedan, so it’s difficult to get the latest figures but in 2010 the automaker sold just 2,848 examples of the odd-shaped crossover in the U.S.

No word yet on any planned updates for the car’s mechanicals, though it’s possible more power will be drawn from its engines. Currently, the 535i delivers 306 horsepower from its turbocharged straight-six engine, while the 550i delivers up to 400 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged V-8.

Inside, expect an updated navigation system, a revised menu for the iDrive system and more voice-activated controls as part of BMW's expanding ConnectedDrive technology portfolio.

Stay tuned for updates as development continues.
