Bugatti Veyron L'Or Blanc

Bugatti Veyron L'Or Blanc

We've told you about Bugatti's Veyron L'Or Blanc, maybe the first supercar to elevate porcelain to the pantheon of supercar cues, right up there next to digital gauges and carbon-fiber trim. After seeing it in person today at The Quail--"a motorsports gathering," one component of the fabulous Pebble Beach Concours/Monterey classics weekend--we're less inclined to see the Blanc edition as a trim package, and more as a piece of pop art.

The Blanc's slashes and ribs of white paint set off the real porcelain details, which were aided and abetted by Königliche Porzellan-Manufatur Berlin (KPM), a German pottery barn. You might know that vehicles like the current BMW 7-Series already sport some porcelain--the Bimmer, in its lightweight dash knobs--but in this Bugatti, they're more evident, as in the center caps on the wheels.

Bugatti's director of sales, Dr. Stefan Brungs, admits it's an unusual idea to use the white kaolin clay for the supercar's details, but links it to Ettore Bugatti, who he says "loved to experiment with new materials."

Want to experiment with it yourself, or play around with the Veyron Grand Sport's 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds and top speed of 253 mph? You'll need about $2.4 million. And a last-minute flight to Monterey wouldn't hurt.
