So, as a last hurrah, the automaker is planning to unveil a limited edition model at next month’s 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, an invite for which we saw last week.
While initial thoughts were for a production version of last year’s stunning Sesto Elemento concept car, itself based on the Gallardo platform, new reports suggest that Lamborghini’s new “super sports car” will be a road-going version of its Gallardo Super Trofeo race car.
Destined to be the most hardcore Gallardo ever produced, this new model is expected to don the race car's 570 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque 5.2-liter V-10 engine, as well as a six-speed e-gear transmission, all-wheel drive configuration, and race-spec suspension.
Like the one-make race series that the Super Trofeo competes in, only 30 cars will be produced, each tipping the scales at just 2,866 pounds. Yes, that’s a full 220 pounds lighter than the standard Gallardo, and a full 88 pounds lighter than the already lithe Superleggera.
Styling wise, the Frankfurt debut should feature an aggressive bodykit styled after the Super Trofeo kit, including a huge fixed rear wing.
Expect 0-60 mph times of around 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 210 mph.
