Don't get too excited because we’ve been here a few times already but according to the latest reports out of Germany Audi is planning a new mid-engine sports car to slot in between the TT and R8.

AutoBild reports that Audi is looking at launching a new sports car based on the bones of the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman. The car is said to be referred to internally as PO455 and if built would likely be called an R6.

You’ll recall that Audi has rolled out a couple of mid-engine sports car concepts in recent years, including 2010's popular Quattro concept. And, after a flurry of rumors, talk of any production version, previously tipped to be called an R4, went dead. So what’s different this time around?

Well, Audi is finally getting serious about its performance division, which was recently rebranded Audi Sport. The division appointed former Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann as its new head and is planning an onslaught of new RS cars—and potentially a new R-badged sports car as well.

At this point, though, it's all speculative, so hold out for a concept and some form of official confirmation before you break open the piggy bank.
