The Nissan Leaf Nismo RC electric race car is an intriguing look at the (very likely) inevitable future of motorsports, and the day we're all talking in volts, amps, and kilowatt-hours instead of horsepower and fuel capacity may not be that far off as we saw yesterday with the Formulec EF01.

While the Leaf Nismo RC may not be as extreme as the EF01, it isn’t just a one-off concept never to be seen again. Following its debut at the recent 2011 New York Auto Show, the Leaf Nismo RC is now serving as a rolling laboratory for the accelerated development of electric cars and aerodynamic systems, as well as a platform for the development of new green motorsports series.

Today we have a video detailing the electric race car’s first shakedown test at Sodegaura Forest Raceway in Japan.

What’s quickly becoming apparent is that the attributes of electric race cars, namely, their lack of noise and emissions, is opening up a new opportunity where races can take place indoors or in urban areas.
