Just five years ago, Volkswagen launched a special edition GTI Edition 30 to mark the 30th anniversary of the sporty GTI hatchback. Back then, VW was building its MkV Golf and in GTI Edition 30 trim the car came packing some 230 horsepower and the choice of either six-speed manual or dual-clutch DSG transmissions.

Fast forward to today and VW is launching the GTI Edition 35, now based on the latest MkVI model and you guessed it, complete with 235 hp.

Visual differences over the standard GTI include new body-colored side skirts, a chin spoiler as well as unique front and rear bumpers. Tinted taillights, 18-inch alloys and small "35" badging finish off the exterior styling. Inside, the car comes with new sport bucket seats with leather trim and "Edition 35" labels throughout.

The Golf GTI Edition 35 goes on sale in Europe later this week but sadly, there’s no word if this more potent version of the popular sports hatch is coming to the U.S. Its first public appearance will be at the legendary GTI meet on June 1 in Wörthersee, Austria.
