Pagani’s planned 100-car production run for the Huayra will soon come to an end (all 100 build slots are already sold), after which the company will turn its attention to an open-top Huayra Roadster that will also be built in a limited run of 100 cars. However, we could see a more hardcore version of the Huayra coupe along the way, as indicated by this prototype spotted near Germany’s Nürburgring.

Compared to the current Huayra, which made its debut back in 2011, the prototype appears to be wearing a new front splitter, larger diameter exhaust pipes and some bright green brake calipers. The prototype is also covered in QR codes, which when scanned lead to a video with the message “to be continued”.

About a year ago, reports emerged claiming Pagani was planning a hardcore Huayra dubbed the Nürburgring Edition, similar to how the previous Zonda had its own hardcore Zonda R variant. Around the same time, a Huayra test mule was spotted outside Mercedes-AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany (seen in earlier shots), which makes sense as Mercedes-AMG supplies Pagani with engines, including the bespoke twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 engine that powers the Huayra.

The engine is currently rated at 720 horsepower, but with rival supercars such as the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Koenigsegg Agera RS all developing in excess of 900 horses, the Pagani’s numbers are starting to look a little feeble. Even higher volume models like the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 SuperVeloce are producing more power than the Huayra.

This means we can expect more power for the hardcore Huayra. Look for an announcement or reveal either at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September or the Geneva Motor Show next March.

Pagani has some busy months ahead of it. In addition to wrapping up production of the current Huayra, the company is readying a new state-of-the-art factory near its current workshop in San Cesario sul Panaro, Italy. The new factory is expected to be ready in September and will likely start off producing this hardcore Huayra or the aforementioned Huayra Roadster.
